Some of you may be familiar with the idea that we may move to Poland someday. Nothing is for sure, and we are just as likely to end up in London, or New York or stay in Dallas, but Poland is definitely on the table. For most, the isolation which would come from moving to such an environment would be overwhelming. Yesterday I realized that it’s quite possible that I would survive if we did so.
You see, yesterday I celebrated my 24th birthday without seeing a single person I know, and I loved every moment.
I started things off on the right note by getting all gussied up in the new dress I bought during the Macy’s one day sale for $30. I wore the earrings my parents gave me for the wedding, the necklace TH gave me as a wedding gift, and my funnest pair of heels. I tried to leave the spare tire around my middle at home, but it insisted on spending the day with me.
And a picture of the heels for no good reason, other than to show you how darling they are. (They’re actually a size too big and I can hardly walk in them, but I wear them despite the blisters.)
Although I vowed I wouldn’t do anything business related that day, I was already headed downtown so I stopped by the county Clerk’s office to cross one important thing off of my to-do list. This isn’t the building where I found the clerk, but it’s much prettier than the building where his office resides so I took a picture of it instead.
What is this form? It’s my assumed name certificate! I can officially open up a bank account and start accepting MONEY.
Next stop on the birthday tour was the Dallas public library. I had high hopes, but I wasn’t that impressed until…
I found the used book section! I got all of these book for $5.50. Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own, a hardback about the Holocaust, a book of love poems, Elizabeth Post’s The Wonderful World of Weddings (a 1970 classic which I must share with you all), and a naughty indulgence in the form of a lifestyle columnist’s memoir about her experience with pregnancy. I hope to be a mom just like her someday.
Then it was on to Sprinkles! This nice man standing next to me saw that I was taking pictures of the Sprinkles sign and asked if I would like him to take a picture for me. Am I in focus? Nope. This goes to prove that holding a $1400 camera in your hand doesn’t even give you $1 photos if you don’t know how to focus properly.
But at least you can see how excited I am to be there!
I ordered my cupcakes (a box of four for $13, robbery!), packed them in my car and saved them for later.
It was time for lunch/dinner, so I stopped into La Madelaine for a quiche and lemon tart. And a little light reading on the side.
A trip to the temple for an endowment session left me feeling relaxed and peace about some things I had been praying about. I know some have a difficult time understanding the temple, but there is no better way to describe it than a respite. Like the spa, except free. And a better investment in the long run. It is a way of escaping from the pressures and the stresses of the world, a place of peace. I always leave wishing I spent more time there.
Even though I rented a movie last night (Man on Wire, a definite must see), I went back again and got another. This time I chose La Vie En Rose. Moving and beautiful. Also reinforced my belief that the Word of Wisdom is from God. Dependency on alcohol and drugs can do awful things to a person.

Once I started the movie, it was time for the cupcakes (well obviously I took these pictures before the movie started, but I ate the cupcakes during the show).
Genius branding. All businesses can take a tip from Sprinkles. I love food that is almost too pretty to eat.
Red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting. In case you were wondering the circles on top are absolutely disgusting. The emphasis is obviously on design, not taste when it comes to those bad boys.
I don’t recommend eating more than one at a time. Unless you want a tummy ache like me.
But I do recommend them. Once a year. Because no one can afford $3.50 cupcakes more often than that.
A lovely birthday. Could have been made twice as wonderful with my husband sitting on the couch eating cupcakes and swooning over the music with me (okay, he would have watched very passively, not swooned), but at this point we’re so happy that he has a good job I can’t complain about the many nights we spend apart. And the reunions when we come together once again are so sweet.
How does 24 feel? Great on my end. I wish a day just as wonderful for all of you in the year to come. Thank you for all of your lovely words and birthday wishes, they were the cherry on top of my sundea of a day. (Or the sprinkle on top of my cupcake if you will.)
XOXOXO

Unlike you, I am not very good at celebrating my birthday. Sure it was fun and evident for it to happen when I was a kid. But to gather up people as an adult to celebrate me was rather hard. Until friends would stimulate me doing something. My birthday is in August, a time where friends and family often are on vacation, or I myself am gone. Last year I spend my birthday all by myself but I would not let it get to me. I was in the States and decided to make a fun day out of it, with things (food, places to go) that I would LOVE. It was wonderful. So, yes birthdays on your own are what you make of it… and you can make the move to Poland!

Loved this post. I like my own company a lot too. (Sometimes too much!) Special occasions are nearly always shared (as they should be of course) but sometimes having one to yourself, and treating yourself properly, is food for the soul.

Haha, go you! That sounds like my kind of awesome day. If I’m by myself on my birthday I usually buy a big box of chocolates and guzzle while watching an awesome movie or two. La Vie en Rose was such a sad thing, but Marion Cotillard was phenomenal! Have you watched ‘Life With Judy Garland: Me & My Shadows’? Similar biopic, also excellent. It’s so sad what drugs did to such great talents. Anyway.
The cupcakes look yummy! And congrats on getting your name license-thingy so that you can charge money in your business name! Well done

I am glad that you had such a great day. The shoes are great, but you shouldn’t expect sympathy about your supposed spare tire when you post pictures of yourself looking so cute!
Going to church is always such a refreshing way to spend time. I do, however, think that it is funny that you spent money on your gratis jaunt to the library!

Looks like you had a fun! I love buying books at the library and I super jealous of the Emily Post book–how vintage!

I’m going to take some notes! I think I am going to be husband-less for my 24th birthday too, due to a work trip. And like you, my family lives in another state.
I’m glad you had an awesome birthday, even if it was alone!

I tend to want to spend my birthday all on my own. I started shunning partied when I was about 15. It really has nothing to do with denying how old I am, just that I don’t do well in big groups. I much prefer a few close friends that I hang out with when it’s just a regular ol’ day.
I’m curious about the old wedding book. I love old books, especially if they were owned by a few people and marked in. I remember leafing through old text books in gradeschool and getting excited to read the cards and see just who owned it before.

Glad you had a great Dallas birthday. You’ll have to let me know which of the Sprinkles cupcakes is your favorite. Mine is the black and white. But I can only eat a few bites before the sugar coma sets in!

Dude, you need to get yourself a tripod! These “holding the camera looking at yourself in the mirror” shots are not professional photographer worthy! (Although I understand that a DSLR might not have a self-timer function, your little point and shoot canon should!)
Thanks for the recap of your day – I’m moving to Michigan all by my lonesome in June and the first weekend there is my birthday weekend! Which I have to spend alone in a new city – but I’m feeling inspired to make the day about having fun in my own way…

I could refer you to several absolutely phenomenal professional photographers who frequently take pictures of themselves either alone or with their children
. I think it’s fun and I love those kinds of pictures! DSLR’s do have self-timer, by the way!

If you know you’ll be alone for your birthday, you really can make it fun! I’m glad you took it as a day to do whatever you wanted – that is quite nice once in awhile. (what I hate is when you plan to be people and have a fun day with people, then it seems like you just spend it all alone anyway!)
Thanks for taking us on a picture tour of your day!

Oooh, I also have a side question about the temple. Are there sessions every day? Is there a standard schedule or something?

Jenna Reply:

The schedule varies per temple. Remember there are several different ordinances that take place in the temple (baptism, endowment, and sealing). Baptisms in the temple are always for the dead, and endowments and sealings happen both for the living and the dead.
At our temple, endowment sessions pretty much happen on the hour every hour. Sometimes there are only 4 or 5 people in a room made for 20 or 30. I believe baptisms happen by appointment, and sealings happen after each endowment session (they always announce that those who would like to do sealings after the endowment session may do so if they wish).

I’m also late – but happy birthday!! I HEART those shoes.
Like MHB – I was wondering about the endowment session you went to today. Are those a “drop in” event?! Or were you sponsoring/supporting someone?

I talked about the schedule above, but to answer your second question, after a person does their ordinance work for themself the first time, they always are doing work for the dead each time they return. I did my own work on October 10th (endowments) and October 11th (sealing) of last year, and as I return to the temple throughout my life I will continue to do ordinance work for those who have died each time I visit.
Sorry that answer was kind of confusing, does that make sense?

That answer was helpful, thanks! So if you woke up one morning and felt called to the temple, could you show up unannounced and do ordinance work for the dead? Or is there a schedule and you have to sign up in advance?
I love the idea of just going into the Church when you feel called to do the Lord’s work.

I can show up anytime the temple is open and do whatever kind of sessions are available. It’s different for every single temple, but for example, ours has endowment sessions every hour on the hour Tuesday-Saturday. You rarely have to sign up to do anything, only if you are coming in very large groups or something.

I’m glad that you still had a fabulous day, despite not seeing anyone you know. I also wanted to mention that you may want to be careful about handing over your $1400 camera to some stranger. I’ve heard of people offering to take a picture and running off with the camera while you pose some distance off.

Well, my birthday is soon coming up and since childhood, I had always wanted to have a birthday alone.
I was born on the last day of the year and some people may like everyone to remember their’s but I absolutely wish I were invisible on that day.
All I want to do is be by myself and of course talk to mom, dad, & sis. How do i avoid anyone who is offering to celebrate my birthday with me?
