Trunk or Treat & Pumpkin Carving Movie Fest 2009

Trunk or Treat is one of those things that Mormons probably didn’t invent, but have claimed hold to like green jello. My parent’s said their ward did one on halloween night this year, my friend in California just wrote about hers, my sister planned the one her ward did in Utah, and the two wards in our church building each had one, one the week before Halloween and one the day before.

What’s a Trunk or Treat? Just back you trunk up to the sidewalk around the church, sit or stand near it with a bag of candy, and allow a bunch of kids to run around collecting sweets at a feverish pace and you have one of your own!

Some parents got really into it and decorated their trunks.

I’m going to guess that this household loves football. Just a guess.

trunkortreat-1011

My favorite, the mad scientist trunk!

trunkortreat-1013

One of the cars went for the trick instead of the treats. All of the younger kids were fascinated by this hand and went forward in groups to touch it to find out if it was real.

My second-favorite part of Halloween (first favorite is pumpkin carving) is seeing all of the costumes. I’m pretty sure this spiderman was dresses in his pajamas with a bit of face paint added in for good measure.

trunkortreat-1004

I always wanted to be a princess or a fairy growing up, I suspect my girls will as well.

trunkortreat-1007

Which is why I’m going to have to take advantage of their young age when they are toddlers and do a creative costume like this one!

trunkortreat-1006

I’m not usually a fan of store-bought costumes (I don’t believe I’ve ever worn one), but this little cutie almost changed my mind.

trunkortreat-1012

Our close friends dresses their baby up like a sweet little pumpkin. The mom was smart and bought the costume on clearance last year when she was still pregnant, knowing she would have a baby to dress up the next year. Don’t be surprised if you find me shopping the clearance racks over the next two days attempting to do the same thing!

trunkortreat-1001

This was the event where we wore our costumes. I’m already looking forward to dreaming up something for three next year!

halloween2009-1004

The next night, Halloween, we carved pumpkins! We chose to watch The Innocents while we did so, but we were not impressed. We didn’t even watch it through until the end.

pumpkingcarving-1002

I bought one regular orange great-for-carving pumpkin several weeks ago, but then forgot to get another until we went out looking at 9:30 pm on Halloween night. Word to the wise, no one still has pumpkins at that time! So TH ended up carving a cinderella (he would probably call it a “ghost”) pumpkin.

pumpkingcarving-1003

I used a pen to poke holes in my homemade pattern and trace it on. Each year I google for line drawings and then manipulate them in Photoshop to make a pumpkin carving pattern. This year (surprise!) we went for a baby theme with our pumpkins.

pumpkingcarving-1004

TH hard at work.

pumpkingcarving-1005

Doesn’t his look good? I was so happy he chose this pattern for his as I think it’s so sweet. (I hope you know it’s a father holding his baby, it look just like it!)

pumpkingcarving-1006

We don’t have many pictures together (because we hardly ever do anything worth taking pictures of), so I was really excited about this chance to go outside and take some. We recently went shopping for some new clothes for TH, doesn’t he look sexy?

pumpkingcarving-1007

I adore these next two. And yes he’s looking a little scruffy lately. I like to let him do his thing. :)

pumpkingcarving-1008pumpkingcarving-1009

We have a kissing pumpkin picture for every year we’ve been together. It began as purely coincidence but now I consider it a tradition.

pumpkingcarving-1011

My slightly freaky cartoonish baby pumpkin. I’m proudest of the diaper but wishing the eyes were a bit smaller!

pumpkingcarving-1015

How sweet is this?!?!?! He’s going to be the best dad.

pumpkingcarving-1016

Another fantastic Halloween down, and so many wonderful holidays coming up. Don’t you just love fall?

First, where did you find your tshirt? I love it!

Second, I’ve never thought of creating my own pumpkin carving pattern. Any chance you could give us a tutorial?

Your two pumpkins are so cute, and I love the kissing-pumpkin picture tradition!

I made it actually! My aunt has a machine that does professional looking shirts and she let me borrow it for a day to make Christmas presents for my roommates once.

I’m not sure if a tutorial would be any good since I don’t actually know what I’m doing. I just create a new document, paste the drawing in from the internet, and then use the painbrush and paint bucket to fill in lines appropriately. It’s something you probably couldn’t manage if you don’t know Photoshop that well, and would be too elementary for those who know Photoshop really well!

I love the trunk or treat idea! Our church and a few others do this, except each car depicts a Bible story. The families dress up to go along with the story and when kids stop by for candy, they see the Bible story come to life (shortened, of course). It’s been a huge hit!

I love your costumes this year and am already looking forward to what you’ll come up with next year!

By the way, you are glowing in your pictures!! :)

Love this! I have pictures from when we dressed up our piece of junk car in high school for Trunk-or-Treat and it was always so much fun! And I LOVE the pumpkins! The white one wasn’t as small as I thought it’d be, it looks great! All my nieces are super girly so far and into fairies and princesses, but I never wanted to dress up like that when I was little (I wore scary “boy” costumes), so I have no idea what my girls will be like! I’m sure yours will be super cute and girly!

Our church is planning to start Trunk or Treat next year after seeing so many churches be successful with it. I can’t wait to come up with a theme for our “trunk!”

For our first married Halloween, we carved our new “shared” initial into our pumpkin.

Fun Trunk or Treat pictures! Little kids in costumes are always adorable. And what a great idea to make your own patterns! TH’s pumpkin is so sweet (and your baby is pretty impressive, too).

I’d actually never heard of trunk or treat before this. Thanks for the explanation since I saw something like it this year and didn’t know what it was.

That is such a creative idea- ‘trunk-or-treat’! I love it!
Yes I have always loved seeing kids in their halloween costumes! YOU HAVE TO dress up toddlers whatever you want BEFORE they realize what THEY want because you will never see them in a ridiculously hilarious/adorable costume after (like if they insist on being a catepillar versus a cookie)
I noticed you ever so subtly put the pumpkin IN FRONT of your belly obscuring our view! Very tricky TW…. very tricky…

(Sigh) Trunk or treat. Good times. My in-laws ward did one for their ward the night of Halloween. I remember doing it in our ward when we were kids. One year, my dad decided to go all out and use his company trucks and make it a haunted house. IT WAS COOOOL!

I love your carvings! They’re so cute. So, I’m curious. How tall are you and TH? There seems to be a big height difference in your picture. Ty is almost 6′4″ and I’m 5′2″, so you can imagine the neck pain caused from kissing. :)

I’m 5′2 and he is 6′0, so not quite the height difference you and Ty deal with but my neck does hurt if we stand and kiss for too long. :)

I thought Trunk or Treat was a midwest- west Mormon thing, because none of my east coast Mormon friends had heard of it. But then this year i saw all sorts of churches with signs about their Trunk or Treats. I think it’s spread this way, popular especially in places where parents might not want their kids going to all the houses. And it’s probably easier too, I remember so many halloweens where i was soo tired from walking around our big neighborhood!

    Cute pumpkins!

Can you believe most parents let their kids do it AS WELL as trick or treating? I’m a bit disgusted when I realize how much candy kids get for Halloween now. :) Our church does lots of activities, at least one for each holiday (actually I think at least one a month), so it’s mostly just a nice chance to get together outside of Sunday activities, as well as to invite non-member friends who might be interested in seeing what we are all about!
