I’ve had a few questions concerning what we’ve bought for baby so far, and the short answer is not that much. We paid so much for the prenatal care and birth itself (almost half of what we expect to pay total for baby in the first year!) that we’re working to limit our purchases in other areas. I’ve written once before about items we’ve picked up for baby, and though we have a long way to go before I will feel like we’re completely ready, looking at all of the boxes we have stuffed in different cupboards throughout the house does make me feel like I’m at least doing something.
The Snow Leopard Endangered Species Stroller by Baby Planet. Bought off a deals site because the price was discounted, the reviews I found were positive and it was one of the only non-garish strollers I’ve seen.

Just yesterday I bought a birth tub, not exactly “for” baby, but baby made me buy it so I’m lumping it under the baby purchases category. The Birth Pool in a Box from Waterbirth Solutions. Buying used from another homebirth mama was even cheaper than renting!

My Brest Friend breastfeeding pillow. Many complains from actual moms about ease of use by seems to be a favorite among actual lactation consultants. I bought it used off of Amazon and didn’t even have to pay shipping as the seller ended up working just down the street from where I live!

I know someone is (or several are) going to ask, but unfortunately I don’t know anything about cloth diapers, I’ll write a post about them once I actually have the baby and have used them. I bought three packs of 6 gDiapers in small/medium/large off of a baby product discount site and we plan on using these as covers and stuffing then with pre-folds. Based on some homebirth mamas I talked to I think I’m going to get some Thirsties covers as well.

This onesie from the Dallas Etsy craft fair was one of two clothing splurges I’ve fallen victim to. I just couldn’t pass it up!

My other clothing splurge? This sweet little dress purchased for $10 from an antique store near where I live. NO idea whether we’re having a boy or girl, but I figured if we end up with a boy I can always gift it to someone I know who values sweet vintage pieces like I do.

Annnnnd that’s it! That’s everything I’ve purchased so far and my baby essentials list tells me I still have a long way to go!
Luckily, we are surrounded by friends and family who’ve made it their mission in life to spoil us with gifts.
One of the most substantial gifts so far? This FREE car seat from a high school friend who has twins who recently grew into bigger seats. She offered to send us one of them and I’m pretty sure TH and I looked a little bit like bobble head versions of ourselves as we bobbed our heads over-enthusiastically when she asked whether we would like her to ship it to us. We offered to pay for shipping but the sweet thing wouldn’t let us! We’ll be thanking her each time we strap That 1 in all safe and snug.

As if the seat isn’t enough, she tucked two sleep sacks, several onesies, and a darling little blue knit cap.

Kelli Nicole gifted us a few things almost as soon as we announced the pregnancy! The kimono style pea green onesie on the right is my favorite (although That Husband maintains that it’s too feminine for a baby boy, bah! what does he know).

Also from Kelli Nicole? This plush camera for me baby to play with.

Dumpling/OMG Mom sent us a HUGE box full of goodies. Why? Because she’s the sweetest southern gal I’ve ever met. Seriously, I did nothing to deserve this. Go over to her blog and tell her how awesome she is, a hike in her comments is the least I can do to say thanks for helping me out with the things I never would have purchased myself before baby came.

Three more sleep sacks (is that the right name?) from Mandy. The little bear face with the words “I love hugs” makes me feel a little bit teary-eyed for some reason. Baby will be here so soon!

I bought something only available in Canada and Kasia was kind enough to take the time to ship it down for me. I found this onesie tucked inside as a surprise as well! I’m going to put it on baby and pretend like we were cool enough to attend the Vancouver Olympics this year.

Another bee (yes, we WB girls are pretty dang tight even after our weddings), Miss Dew Drop, drew my name for our ornament exchange this year. Her package included cookies (yum!), an avocado ornament, and the onesie you see below. Lucky me!

My incredibly craft grandma gifted us two receiving blankets, one pink and one blue. You better believe I’m going to be wrapping baby in both colors, no matter the gender. These handmade items are too precious not to be used!

She made this hat as well.

My favorite gift so far? These personalized onesies from That Sister were our Christmas gift from her this year and I adore them. Love love love!

This one is my favorite. (It reads “Andersen Organics” if you can’t see it, a nod to our organic farmer father that sister and I are both so proud of).

On my list of “must purchase” items in the next 60 days?
Birth ball (to be used for the birth and for rocking baby after his/her arrival)
Co-sleeper (baby needs somewhere to sleep!)
Deep freezer
Chair/Glider
Futon (for guests to sleep on and for me to use for breasteeding in our office)
Prefolds
Little baskets to be placed next to my “breastfeeding stations” to fill with snacks, pillows, things to keep me occupied, etc.
Sling(s)
Moms, the clothing/items you see pictures here is currently everything we have. What else/ how much do I need to be stocking up on? (Some of the above items aren’t for newborns either!)

It bugs that when someone asks what you need – my mind goes blank on all those things that I found necessary! Aaah! I didn’t wipes on the list – that’s something worth stocking up on especially if you find them on sale, though maybe you are going with a different baby-wiping method provided you plan to do the cloth diapers and all.
Ooo-I think I got something – - burp rags. Whatever you use, get a lot and stash them all over the house. As I found out with Kyle, babies are always spitting up (even when I nursed) and there is always something to wipe up! You don’t want to be hurting for burp cloths. My MIL makes these awesome ones out of terry cloth that are super absorbant and work great.

Those onesies are adorable! And the handmade blankets and hat–so special that they came from your talented grandma!
I know you said you don’t know much about using the cloth diapers yet, but I am curious about why you chose them. Is it because they are better for the environment?

I can’t honestly say that I’m choosing cloth solely because of the environmental factor, as it’s the money saved that is our biggest reason. Knowing we won’t be contributing to a huge mound of nasty rotting diapers does make me feel nice though.

Like you, I know nothing about cloth diapering. {Probably okay since I’m not pregnant and don’t have kids.
} But Julia, at My Life in Transition, has shared a wealth of information about cloth diapering on her blog. She’s done a number of great posts on cloth diapering and has lots of links to sites about cloth diapering. Thought you might be interested. Hope she doesn’t mind me sharing a link to her great post with you:

Hey Jenna – what about a changing table or changing pad? I know that one of my crafty friends bought two nightstands from IKEA and used those for a station with a pad on top. Bonus was that it doubled as lots of extra storage.
And! I just saw on the news it’s snowing in Dallas!?!

I’m a big fan of buying/borrowing/swapping used baby accessories. With the exception of the baby, I can’t think of anything I want that’s new!! Cribs, changing tables, bassinets, strollers, etc. – everything is so expensive – and it is all so temporary with how quickly babies grow. Friends and craigslist are wonderful for gently used things and I recently heard about a giant baby/kids swap meet. It is twice a year (where I live in CA) in the football stadium parking lot. It is a giant garage sale for all things baby. I was at a baby shower and a mom was talking about it and she said that she rented a UHaul to bring all of her kids baby-things to the swap meet. Without even thinking (of the cribs, strollers, etc.) I blurted out – how could you have so much stuff!?! Working on my judging and rudeness

This is more of a suggestion of what not to buy, haha, but every. single. one. of my friends with babies lament how much clothing they have that never gets worn before baby is too big for it. People love buying tons of clothes for eensy-weensy babies, so they were buried in lots of clothes for birth to 6 months- my cousin had an entire drawer filled with tiny socks!- and nothing for after.
One thing I’ve seen my cousin use over and over again is a small pack n’ play, a little portable bed. This allowed she and her husband to attend birthday parties, hang out with the family and play cards and drink coffee, etc., but allowed baby to be put down to bed at his bedtime in a quiet room. They didn’t have to miss out on being social with family and friends and going to other people’s houses, and baby had a safe place to sleep and stay on schedule.

I agree with you! I have a rule that I RARELY buy someone something for a baby under 6 months (though I’m pretty sure some of the things I got for Jenna were because they didn’t have any other size
).
And ditto to the pack and play. My 9-month-old nephew sleeps in one (ah, the 3rd child). Most/all of my siblings use them and love them.

Hey Jenna! Second the burp cloth/diaper thing, I have found I can never have too many. You might want to get a few bottles, just in case. You never know what might happen. Tucks pads are good for the ‘roids after birth. Maybe you could find a medical supply store and find the icepack/pads things for vaginal births, they’re pretty cool (No pun intended).
I like the gerber kimono tops, they were great for the baby when she still had the belly button nub that would get aggravated. They come in packs of three or five, I can’t remember.
What stroller are you going to use when the baby is just born? Your stroller is only safe after a month, and the baby will be super tiny and floppy in that stroller. Are you just going to do a month long lying in, because that wouldn’t need the use of a stroller? Also, a snuggler for the stroller would be useful and buffer the jolt for the baby when it’s big enough to be in the stroller, when it gets all tossed around on walks. Piper was super floppy, and that was IN her carseat on the stroller base.
I really can’t remember anything else. You may want to get a humidifier, and some baby saline solution, I use it almost daily!
Good luck!!

Amber,
Thanks for taking the time to leave so many great tips! I added several things to my list based on what you said. As for your question about the stroller, I’m planning on being a sling user so we aren’t worried about stroller use before we hit a month. It’s highly likely the stroller will hardly get used, I mostly wanted to have something for That Husband to push around since I know he isn’t going to be big on the idea of wearing baby all the time like I am.

Evelyn Reply:

One thing to consider while looking at slings is weight distribution. If it’s only on one shoulder, you’re going to feel the weight, and probably pretty soon. Also, if you have any hip problems (maybe back falls in this realm too) you want something that will distribute the weight rather evenly over both shoulders and hips. Especially if you use your carrier more than just the first couple months.

I’ve got a little concern about your birth tub, and maybe you’ve already thought of this and it’s totally nothing to worry about. I can’t tell how big it is from the photo but it kinda looks like a blow up hot tub. Just keep in mind (and maybe it’s already on your mind
) that if it’s that big, filled with water it’ll weigh a LOT, and I know you’re in an apartment so if you’re not ground floor… you might google it to be sure you won’t go crashing through the floor! Again… this might be a moot point if you’ve already done your research like with everything else birth related… just wanted to mention it JUST in case

Also: for ladies with hand me down car seats (We have two, so I’m totally not judging), keep in mind that carseats can have an expiration date, so you might want to check when you get them from Craigslist or yard sales.
Even new, but sitting on store shelf car seats expire, too.
Jenna, most highway patrol groups will check your car seat to check if it’s installed correctly, I know that’s a major concern!

Is it that super cute red one in your spare room? Maybe we should look at what the cost would be to ship it down here, it might be cheaper to do that than buy a new one! Plus isn’t that one from a real furniture store, meaning it would be nicer quality than what we would get at Ikea.

I am just making an assumption that you want a deep freeze so you can stockpile milk (I could be way wrong here, I just know other mothers that have done this), but I didn’t think I read anywhere that you had purchased a pump, so it crossed my mind!

I loved those little t-shirts for my summer baby. But don’t bother getting newborn size unless you think baby will weigh 5 lbs. Also, I LOVED my wrap. If you sew, you could make one for super cheap, really easy. If you don’t sew, you could make 3 and sell 2 or keep 2 or whatever. Let me know if you want directions! I’ve used out stroller maybe 5 times since Claire was born, and 3 of those times were to push around our junk while she was in a carrier. It’s just so much easier. And lots of cheapo washcloths (those are my fave for wipes too) and a few hooded towels. I also loved having somewhere to put her (swing or bouncy or something, both which we were given). We also borrowed a baby tub and an exer-saucer from our neighbors (no one wants to store those huge things when they aren’t using them!). Um, I like having a little wide brim hat for walks to protect her face. And she still lives in her miracle blanket. Let me know if you have cloth diapering questions, I’ve used just about everything!

Having severe skin allergies limited me on diaper wipe usage. My SIL gave me a fabulous recipe and we found the perfect containers for them, so I made my own wipes for all four of our children (I actually still have the containers, and don’t mind sending you one, if you send me your address). Find a container that has a flip-top lid with a rubber ring in it (keeping the wipes fresh). Cut a roll of paper towels in half – so each half looks kinda like a roll of toilet paper – we used an electric knife to do this. Fold one of the halves into itself, to break down the cardboard center, then gently pull the cardboard center out – this will be the beginning of your wipes, so you want one to kinda pull out with the center. Discard the cardboard. Mix together 2 c. hot water, 2 T. baby oil (this is all we used, but the original recipe also had 2 T. baby bath wash – we just didn’t like the residue it left). Baby oil and water don’t mix, of course, but the hot water will soak thru the towels better than cold water. Squeeze your roll to fit into the container, with the center wipe starting to come out a bit. Pour the mixture over your towels and wait about an hour for it to absorb all the way through. We found that Bounty regular rolls (not the big rolls and not the select-a-size) were the best ones – they held up the best under duress, so to speak!
The other thing we couldn’t live without with newborns was baby SOCKS. Their little piggies get really cold, even in the sleep sacks. It’s hard to find some that will STAY ON, but I think we finally found them with our last child from a Wally World, though I can’t remember the name of them anymore.

At least you know I’m not brief….
We do things super minimalist-style, which it sounds like you guys may be keen on…
Cloth diapers: We started cloth diapers when Addie was 3 months old (when we moved to Kazakhstan) but we got about 24 regular, and 12 large sized prefolds (there are some differences in the layers and inches of prefolds on the market, I’ll see if I can look that up), about 12 doublers, 4 snappis, and a whole bunch of gerber covers [obviously, the really cheap route! But we would have done Thirsties if I’d been more on the ball before we flew abroad]. Check out http://www.clothdiaper.com. I believe that’s where we got our cloth diapers, doublers and snappis all for about $53 (including shipping).
Crib/Pack-n-play: We used a stand alone bassinet we were given in conjunction with the bassinet in the pack-n-play (it can be nice to have a crib in more than one room) before going to KZ. We brought the pack-n-play with us to KZ and it’s the only thing we’ve used since. We’ve never had a standard wooden crib and don’t regret it. The pack-n-play was a gift from coworkers, but I think it was about $130, and is really sturdy. It is incredibly useful for traveling and convenience purposes. We LOVE it.
Clothes: I’ve decided that plain old onesies and play-all-days are my big must-haves. Get the gender neutral sleepers, they are great (especially the ones with feet, I know bag-bottoms are popular…) and you will love being able to use them with each baby you have. Once you have the baby, get your play-all-days–they are simple and cute. Someone mentioned plain old white socks, and I totally agree. We were given a pkg of 12 that I think were Cherokee brand (Target, right?) and fit her at 3 months, they were for 3m-18m and they’ve worked that long (and seen a LOT of use!).
Clothing brand tips: Gerber brand stuff runs super small. SUPER small. A lot of the etsy and homemade stuff is with gerber onesies, so plan on using those much earlier than the month range that’s on it, or else they won’t fit your baby when you go to dress him/her. I love Carter clothes because they’re generally cute, rather simple, and run kinda large–which means you get a lot of use out of the clothes. I’ve recently decided I like Old Navy stuff too, but Carters are still my fav (shop outlets, TJMaxx, Marshalls, etc.).
Get a booster seat/high chair. Generally the simpler, the better. My favorite model is a fisher-price one that has the tray and 2-3 tray inserts, but when we were expecting it was out of stock & discontinued for an “improved” model. Like this http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3553506&fromWidget=BRU%3ACategory%3ATop+Sellers
So easy to use and travel with.
Diaper bag: You’ll need one, I like the one we have for when we are traveling or need to pack a lot of stuff to keep Addie amused (read: church), but it’s rather big and bulky for every day stuff. For the first little while you should be able to get by with a large purse (if you have one??) and just pack a diaper or two, wipes, pacifier (if your baby takes one), burp cloth, nursing cover and maybe one small toy. It sounds like a lot, but it really doesn’t take up too much room.
Nursing pads: Have some ready before you have your baby. Lansinoh is my favorite brand. I tried Gerber and maybe another brand (or another type) but they were a mess and really not well designed. Lansinoh is my favorite–we even had Chris’ parents buy them and send them to us when they traveled from Russia to the States while we were in KZ.
Detergent: You may want to consider initially using sensitive-skin detergent like Dreft. A friend bought us a big thing of it for one of my showers, so we never actually bought it ourselves. I understand it’s expensive. We didn’t use anything like it in KZ or since returning to the US. Addie does fine, but some kids don’t. Also, if you don’t use stain removers, you’ll want to start. =) You can make your own pre-treating spray or just buy Shout. In addition, I highly recommend Oxiclean if you aren’t using it already. Everyone will tell you breast-milk babies poop doesn’t stain… but you can’t be laid back about cleaning those poop marks either, because it CAN.

We were given a lot of things initially and we haven’t bought much as we’ve needed more. If you don’t yet do freecycle, you should look into it. We’ve gotten some really great things through it and saved a ton of money on baby clothes and stuff.

We started putting her in a high chair probably around 5/6 months just so we would have a place to put her while we ate (she’d outgrown the bouncer at that point). Every baby is different… she didn’t take to food as readily as some, so she didn’t use it for much food consumption until later.
I just saw a comment below suggesting nursing bras… definitely get one before. I’d recommend a sleeper one, and make sure it’s a little loose-fitting. Although you’ve probably grown while pregnant, you will be SHOCKED at what happens when you let down, it’s like a sudden over-night growth spurt.
