When you tell people you are painting you get one of two responses:
I love painting! Great idea!
or
I hate painting and when you move out you’re going to be kicking yourself for doing so.
I really wanted to paint in our last apartment, but TH wasn’t really up for it and I didn’t push the idea any farther. This time, I started talking about painting really early, and started talking about the very real possibility that I would be able to book extra photo sessions during the winter months because of our amazing lighting conditions. Blank white walls are both boring and difficult to expose for, so I pleaded for just one painted wall in the living room.

Kristin of Bien Living Designs was Mrs. Quiche on Weddingbee, and we’ve been growing closer ever since I announced my move to Chicago. She is just about the sweetest person I’ve ever met, and she offered to help us conquer the task of painting. I’m so clueless that a random person off the street probably could have helped me do a better job than I would have done on my own, but it just so happens that Kristin is an interior designer professionally. And I don’t mean she has a business out of her living room, I mean someone pays her actual money to work in an office in downtown Chicago doing interior design. Can you see why I’m crazy lucky that she was willing to help us with this project?
Per FTC guidelines I want to make it clear that she is offering her services as a designer for free, and I am blogging about them, but she didn’t email me and say “If I help you decorate your apartment will you write about me on your blog?”, it was more like “Hey bee friend, I’m a really nice person and I have only met you one time but I want to help you decorate your new apartment because I like helping people.”
Okay so maybe the email didn’t say those exact words but that’s the basic idea.

First up on the decorating list was painting! I wanted to get it done as quickly as possible because I knew it would be a lot easier to do with empty rooms.
This what we started with. When I emailed her with ideas about decorating the living room I sent pictures of all of the pieces we would have, and told her to go ahead and tell us what paint color to get. The thought of starting the Is this the right color? Maybe one shade lighter? Or darker? discussion stressed me out so I decided to go with whatever she thought was best. Kristin not only offered to help us with the painting, she picked up the paint and brought some supplies from her house so we wouldn’t have to invest in things that we only planned to use once. For the living room she bought PPG Pure Performance eggshell in Summer Suede.

TH also agreed that we should paint the kitchen based on the photo of the kitchen in the model apartment from this post. For the kitchen she chose the color pickling spice.

Kristin said taping edges was a waste of time, so we laid our plastic down and filled our trays and got to work. She carefully went around the edges with a special brush while I used a roller brush quickly fill in the middle. When we made mistakes and got paint on the floorboards and such we quickly wiped it off with a damp rag.

We only had two brushes for the living room but we had some for the kitchen, so Kristin left TH and I to finish the living room while she tackled the kitchen.

Good news, TH walked away from the experience saying that painting really isn’t that bad. Hooray! As long as painting it white again isn’t completely awful I think we’ll be painting future spaces as well. I also need to give That Husband the credit he deserves, he ended up doing much more work than I did. Painting the wall in the living room and above the counters in the kitchen was easy enough that we decided to do a room in the office as well. I’ll show you a picture of the room later because I want you guys to help me what wall vinyl to put on it (if you haven’t seen wall vinyls they look like this or this.)

The finished product! Doesn’t it look amazing?

And Kristin deserves all credit for the painting of kitchen, she did it all herself. It’s so cheery in there now.

Kristin not only did the painting she also pitched in and did a bit of babysitting when That Husband and I were painting. This won’t be the last you see of her smiling face since she’s offered to help with the rest of the decorating once our belongings are put away.

Maybe you want a little bit of Kristin in your life? She has a service called Long Distance Design, where she will work with you to create presentation boards to help decorate your space. If you’re like my mom, you would never need this service. My mom is really creative, she can see a space and picture how different patterns, textures, and colors would work together to create something beautiful. If you’re like me though, with no ability to visualize how a space can be best utilized, then Kristin’s service would be awesome for you. I really like that she not only makes you presentation boards like this, but she also sends you a list of links where you can buy everything pictured
The regular price for her service is $250, but if you contact her and mention That Wife she’ll do her Long Distance Design for $175 (which I’m pretty sure every other interior designer out there would say is crazy cheap). If anyone ends up hiring her and writes a blog about the experience with before and after I would love to write a post here on That Wife to show everyone how she transformed your space. Kristin is such a sweetheart and I think anyone who hires her will be really impressed with the result!

Ok this post REALLY makes me want to paint. We have WHITE WHITE walls in our apartment that are just screaming for a nice coat of paint. That’s awesome Kristin came over to help. You are one lucky lady!
Also, I have those same air ducts/vents in my apartment, but are they at the end of the wall like yours? Noooo, they’re in the MIDDLE of the wall. Literally, smack dab in the middle and really mess things up in terms of wall decorations. Still figuring out how to work around them.

I am *all* for painting apartments! I’ve realized it’s one of the biggest differences between how I perceive the space. Painted walls just brighten up the room and make it seem more permanent. Our current home is the only apartment I’ve ever renewed my lease on, and I think a lot of it is due to the homey feeling!

I love the difference in the kitchen. Are you going to some plant in there or is it too dark for it?
The first thing I did when we bought our house was paint too. So much easier without furniture and in my case even floors to worry about (we ripped of the carpet and put wood floors instead).
Oh and I love wall vinyls (when we have kids that’s what I want to get to decorate the walls). Can’t wait to see what you’re planning on that project.

Love it!!! If I had a place of my own (ie not sharing with 3 other girls that I don’t plan to live in for long) I would totally use her as I’m completely clueless when it comes to interior design. I hope that day comes soon!
Also, I love that P is wearing a onesie I gave him (I think, since I bought it like a year ago).
Oh, and maybe you could get a fake hardwood floor that you could set up for shoots

Looks great!
We’ve never painted a rental. I hate how lack-luster everything seems, but I can’t seem to put in the effort just to paint it white again.
Just curious….is there an open space behind the accent wall? Looks like there is a gap between the window and the wall. Does it have a purpose or just one of those weird things a builder didn’t think about??

It’s possible that when your landlord sees how much better it looks painted, you won’t even have to repaint. Painted apartments often appeal much more to potential renters. Either way though– it looks great– so much warmer.

That looks great! So glad it was easy for you. It makes such a difference but it’s still sophisticated. I hate it when people choose loud colors just so you walk in and it says, “HELLO! We PAINTED!”

Beautiful transformation. Can’t wait to see you use your newly painted wall as a backdrop for pictures, imagine all the fun props you can use! I really like the kitchen color as well. I’m a huge fan of green.
Do you have to repaint the apartment before you move out? I wish my roommates & I would have painted… but we will only be in our apartment for a year and would have to repaint while we are trying to pack up and move later on.

I do love that color – I can’t wait to paint when we move. I’m sick of this sterile, boring-me-to-tears white we have. And I like white, but enough already.
I just might have to look this gal up – - I know what I like and I can get a room *almost* there, but then I get stumped with what curtains to get or how to have just the right amount and size of accessories (don’t like having too many, but don’t want to have too few either!) My mom and sister both inherited this natural ability to just pull a room together with little or no effort, but that talent really didn’t hit me too strongly.
How fortunate you are to have her in the same city to call on for design advice. And with that amazing apartment, you can only make it look even more awesome.

How exciting! I’m one of those “I love painting” people.
Once, when a boyfriend was away, I went to his awful bathroom, stripped all the rose wall paper and painted it light blue. He came home and said, “Have you ever painted anything before?”
“Nope,” I said cheerily. It looked great, though.
I also love those wall vinyl things. I wish they were less expensive!

You have got to share how it’s possible to paint without taping edges. That step, alone, turns painting from a quick fun thing into a huge multi-weekend obnoxious project, and it doesn’t even work that well. Was it a really neat brush she used for the edges or something? Seriously, I hate taping edges and would love to be able to paint without doing so.

Hi! I am happy to share some tips with you! For me, taping is huge time suck. The amount of time spent taping around everything can easily rack up a couple of hours. And let’s not forget about touch-ups after you take the tape off and realized it leaked
which is ultimately what led me to stop taping all together.
First, you need to use a quality angled brush. I prefer Purdy brushes & use 1 /2″ – 2″ width for trimming. Make sure you don’t load up the brush with too much paint. Take the pointed angle of the brush and cut in to the wall at appx. 45 degree angle and steadily, but bot necessarily slowly, drag your brush along the angle. Do appx. a 2 foot section at a time, get more paint and start again from the last point. I’ve found that working slowly isn’t always best – I get shaky. So use confident, steady strokes.
I also have had a lot of practice, so it goes pretty quickly for me. However, TH did the wall/ceiling line and he hadn’t had much practice at all. We didn’t need to do any touching up after it was done.
Hope this helps!

Thanks so much Kristin/Mrs. Quiche! My husband was eagerly looking over my shoulder at your reply, we’re both very interested in doing away with painting tape. You are totally correct that it leaks more often than not anyway. Now to convince him that we ought to take on our bedroom painting project…
