The Healthy Train is over! If you haven’t been following along since the beginning, read the intro post here, and the halfway post here.
I am not where I wanted to be at this point (I’m still 20lbs away from my goal) but I’ve made some great progress and it’s been very encouraging to look at these photos. I chose to wear a shirt that’s a lot tighter than I would every walk around in at my current weight but I wanted to be able to really show where I’m at right now.

Though I”m still frustrated by the size of my stomach on a daily basis, it is looking a lot better. I just want it to be flat! (Or really, really close to it) I’ve never really had a flat stomach before and that is my goal before getting knocked up again.

I see the biggest difference from behind! All of that running has really changed the shape of my bum and thighs.

I’ve been stuck waffling between 154-156 lbs for months now and I’m SO SICK of seeing those numbers each time I get on the scale. The last few weeks I’ve been exercising 4-6 days per week. Running 3x/week, yoga, lifting 1x/week, and some elliptical on my parent’s machine as well. I do think my black pants fit a tiny bit better, so it’s possible I’m losing inches and not pounds, but I have so much left to lose that there is no way I can stay at this weight while meeting my goal. The number needs to move down eventually!
Bobbi should have the results up on her blog soon. It looks like I may have finished in 2nd place, but the winner killed it and I didn’t even come close to losing what she did. I really hope she sends in before/after pictures so we can see the results!
Two more months until the end of That Weight Loss Challenge. I really hope to be showing you some drastic results in my after pictures! On a side note, I did The Biggest Loser: Weight Loss Yoga this week and it was actually my favorite yoga workout so far! Less emphasis on om and centering and stretching, more on strength building and fat burning. Another thing I loved about this workout? Bob has regular (aka, belly fat and flabby arms and such) people doing the workout along with him, so I didn’t feel like a loser unable to keep up with absolutely everyone else.

I’m so happy to hear that you are giving yoga another chance! In my experience, doing the right style with the right instructor for you makes a whole world of difference. I, too, enjoy yoga the most when it is very physically challenging. I take a vinyasa flow class with an amazing instructor and it’s one of my favorite parts of my week. I always sweat a lot during class (and it’s not a hot yoga class) and some days I feel like I can barely walk out of class because my body has worked so hard. One of the things I love the most about these challenging yoga classes is that it is so beautiful to see how much the body can do, and it is also so amazing to really feel every pose and asana from head to toe.
Anyway. Enough about yoga. Your progress is great so far! I feel your frustration, however. I’m participating in TWLC and I’ve plateaued the past month and a half. I lost 15 lbs and I want to lose another 20, but that number hasn’t budged for a while! But if I’m being honest with myself, I realize that in the last month and a half, I’ve gone on vacation, had a birthday and an anniversary, as well as numerous family get-togethers. So. There’s a distinct reason why my weight loss has slowed, but I enjoyed myself and now I’m ready to start seeing lower numbers again!

You look fabulous!! You can see major differences everywhere–face, arms, back, stomach, bum, legs! Seriously your hard work is really paying off even if it’s slower going than you’d like.
Have you thought about adding more strength training to your routine? I am far from any sort of expert, but I do a bunch of workout DVDs at home (LOVE) and Jillian Michaels always says that the quickest way to get weight off is to do a combination of strength and cardio training, which is to say to do strength training about three times a week. I don’t know what kind of science she backs this up with, but it seems like you might be open to something new to try to get over the plateau you’re on. I have really enjoyed “Bikini Ready Fast” with Ellen Barrett–the title is STUPID but it’s a really wonderful strength video that focuses primarily on the upper body, but not to the exclusion of your core and lower body. Ellen Barrett is an excellent instructor. You can check out workout DVD previews at collagevideo.com, and I get all of my DVDs from my local library. I have a set of 3, 4 and 5 pound weights (that I owned previously and were given by a friend) and a yoga mat and that’s all I’ve needed (and a sports bra). Keep up the great work! You will get over this hump!

Your after pictures look really terrific. I know you’ve worked hard and I don’t mean to detract from that at all. However…I think a lot of the “improvement” is also how happy you look and the fact that you are wearing attractive, well-fitting clothes in your after pictures. I think it goes along with the comments that you received about the Nordstrom’s sale…dress attractively for your size & shape instead of the one you hope to be. Good advice for all of us who think we’d look a lot better when this part or that one is smaller, more toned, etc.
I love the jeans that you’re wearing…what kind are they?? They fit you well and the shirt is a cute cut even thought it’s a “plain” white t.

I agree with your point, but I went back and read the first post just for a reminder and in it Jenna is saying she took this before shot right after a workout, and she wanted to look like this in her before- no makeup, no smile, tighter/lighter clothes to show her true shape, etc.- so that she could see a huge difference in the after.

I actually said “holy, freaking crap!” out loud. You look fabulous! Those plateaus can be frustrating. Kudos to you for not giving up. Perhaps your body has grown accustomed to running? Maybe try some running speed work and lifting more days per week? I’m not an expert but I have noticed that switching things up keeps the results coming, at least for me
Good luck! You look stunning! I look forward to the finale pictures!

On a sidenote, even though I had to drop out of your weightloss challenge (due to pregnancy), I’m so happy I participated when I could. I lost about 15 pounds before finding out I was pregnant. Those 15 pounds made a world of difference for me. I’m even happy to report that at 23 weeks pregnant, I’m still at a weight that is less than I was at the beginning of the year
. Your eating choices inspire me to stay healthy while pregnant and not use the “cravings” and “eating for two” excuses.
Best of luck to you shedding those final pounds!

First, a huge CONGRATULATIONS!!!, for not only looking amazing, but for creating some incredible habits that will benefit you (and your family) for a lifetime. In a very short amount of time you created healthy habits that people have been resolving to create for decades. You should be very, very proud of yourself – and I for one am incredibly in awe of how hard you continuously work in all aspects of your life to be the best Jenna you can be. Bravo!!
Unsolicited advice about your recent plateau – adding more strength training worked for me. I worked out 2-3x per week with a trainer (more below on how I got it for free) and we worked out for 50 minutes and went really quickly between weightmachines/exercises. So there was definitely cardio (I guess this is called circuit training) as I was sweating and short of breath for the whole thing – but it was definitely strength training because I was squatting and lifting the entire time. I really think it was the best bang for my buck (and time) as you get both cardio and strength. Plus, I guess you continue to burn calories post lifting as the muscles repair.
So how I did this for free and/or on the cheap. I found a student who wanted to start his own personal training business, had the credentials, but had never trained anyone. So I was his guinea pig so he could practice the teaching part of training. I also found another guy who was a student and he charged me $25 per hour (which is WAY below market). I have read about several SAHM morman women who are trying to become trainers on the side – maybe you can post something on craigslist or your ward and barter photography for training? A new trainer would definitely need some awesome pics for their website. So that is my 2 cents – and what I plan to do post baby – is do a lot of weights at a fast pace so I’m getting strength and cardio in one.
**Side note – I didn’t “bulk up” as ppl fear with weights and it was amazing how sour I was for days – made me feel so productive. It also was amazing how strong I felt during that time.

It’s proven that women don’t bulk up. We don’t have enough testosterone for that to happen.
It’s one reason why women shouldn’t fear weights and muscle workout.

These before and after shots are incredible! I can see the biggest difference from the back as well- I think you’re right, running truly does change your shape. It’s amazing how far you’ve come in the last few months, I hope you are walking on clouds right now
With all that yoga, you will get to a super toned stomach, I promise! I’ve never had a stronger core in my life since adding yoga. I need to try the Biggest Loser flavor of yoga, I’ve heard really good things from lots of people.
I agree with some of the above comments about adding in more strength training if you can (and want to, of course!). Maybe you could try doing the 100 pushups plan. I’ve started doing that in the mornings, and pushups make everything sore on me. Free weights are also great if you have access to them. I’ve only been doing free weights for a month, 3 x a week, with Bobby, but I’ve lost a few inches even while gaining about 3 pounds. Plus, now I can can deadlift and squat my body weight (135 lbs), which makes me feel like a super woman… until the bodybuilder lady comes up behind me and squats 250. Then I feel like my normal self again, haha.
Congrats again!! I’m excited to see the before and afters once the Europe trip comes up. You’re an incredible inspiration to me when it comes to sticking with it and pushing through, I hope you know that!

You are not only skinnier and more shapely, you look younger! More importantly, your heart and lungs and knees and legs have to be so much better for the amount of cardio you’ve added. I ran into midwester heat + humidity and decided that I needed to stop running because my heart was palpating. Which means I am really out of shape. So now I’m doing zumba classes twice a week, and the cardio is really making a difference. Thanks for the inspiration to get off my lazy ass!

I think you’re looking fantastic, Jenna! Congrats on your weight and size loss – you’ve worked hard to deserve it!
I know you may not want suggestions, but I’m going to give you one anyways. (haha) Have you tried adding some strength training to your exercises? My mom and I started seeing a personal trainer in January and it did wonders for my body. I know for me it helped build my muscles faster and since we were always working on different things, my body stayed challenged and continued to improve. I know that from that, my metabolism improved and I lost some weight.

Stubborn belly fat! It’s so hard to get rid of it! I have lost about 80 lbs. total at this point and I still have a pouchy little belly that will not flatten. It can be frustrating and I just try not to let it blind me to all the other successes.
I found classes that combine cardio with lower weight strength training incredibly effective against plateaus (I am NOT into the idea of having a trainer). I found it easy to keep myself motivated throughout because you do bursts of intense cardio followed by “recovery” periods of strength.

Jenna, you look amazing! Congratulations on coming so far. I know it’s been a lot of hard work and a huge amount of dedication on your part and I can’t commend you enough for that. Great job!
I second the suggestions to add more resistance training. I particularly suggest lifting heavy, as it will have a much more significant effect than low weight/high reps (which doesn’t build muscle, but rather increases muscle endurance. The goal is to build some muscle and thereby boost metabolism to increase your basal metabolic rate). Women do not have the hormones needed to bulk up, so that shouldn’t be a concern. If you’re looking for a specific program, I highly recommend reading/following New Rules of Lifting for Women by Lou Schuler.
I also recommend interval training (particularly HIIT) which has a higher afterburn rate than steady-state cardio. For those of us who are runners, it also has the benefit of helping to increase speed.
Right now I run 2x a week, lift heavy 2x a week and do a hot yoga class once a week. I’m trying to find time to add intervals back into the mix too! I found this combination has been great for busting through my weight loss plateau.
Good luck to you – I know that with your determination and knowledge you will be able to reach your goals!

Congratulations, Jenna! I’m 5’2″ as well and gained 13 pounds in only 6 months (got married, moved across country, started working a 70-hrs-a-week job) and I have so admired your fight to get back to a healthy body shape!
I used to do yoga a bit, but experienced the same annoyances as you (too much om, not enough strength/body movement). Then I discovered Pilates. Have you tried it? I LOVE it – lots of focused movement and stretching, just enough to get the heart going and strengthen the body. Plus I think that it is pretty low-impact, meaning, better for your joints. They’ve got some videos for it on Netflix Instant, in case you’re interested.
Best of luck!

Good luck with those last few pounds – when I stall out like that, I’ve had success with either taking a week or so off from my workouts (no, really, sometimes that’s amazing) or stepping up my calorie intake by 100-200 cals a day. Eating enough to maintain the metabolism of an active active active person can help your body stop “holding on” to the extra weight and kickstart a loos. But that’s just me, every-body is different!

You look so great! Congratulations on the weight loss and on doing it by yourself! One thing that I have heard about plateaus is that you may need to decrease your calorie deficit to start losing again (as in eat more). Once you reach a healthy weight you need to be more sneaky about losing it, your body doesn’t feel the need to lose any more. I think a deficit of closer to 600 is good? I’m not quite sure about that though.

Firstly, you look amazing. Secondly, you’ve hit your plateau, and the best way to lose those last pounds is to attempt high impact interval training (HIIT). This will be better for you now, since I’m assuming you run at a constant pace for a given amount of distance.
In fact, it’s not about the length of your workout, but it’s the intensity of your workout that will help you meet your goals. Try by doing HIIT for 15 – 20 minutes a day, and I’m sure you’ll see results, without having to run so much. Start out at a slow, but steady pace. Then, give it all you got for about 20 seconds. Then, go back to your slow and steady pace for a minute to slow down your heart rate, and give it all you’ve got for another 20 seconds – do this for 15 – 20 minutes. Try this for a week and see what happens.

It’s fantastic to see how you’ve been able to change. Not by doing a crash diet but by changing your habits into healthy ones.
I don’t know if I’ve
told you but I use you as an example for people who start running, I tell them how much you’ve achieved with the C25K plan.
Oh and not to make you feel bad, but one of the girls I run with is a mom of 3 kids. She runs, she’s tiny and runs half marathons and more, however I noticed that she still doesn’t have a flat stomach.
So yes you may get a flat one but maybe not depending on how your body works. So don’t beat yourself up if you’re not the image of perfection that you visualized.
I definitely have a flatter stomach and thinner everything from training for the half marathon. My weight however had only changed by maybe 2-3 pounds (mind you I wasn’t that big in the first place although people have noticed the difference).

I’ve been on vacation and just catching up on my blogs. WOW. You look fantastic!!! I know you aren’t where you want to be but it is an amazing difference. The happiness on your face is so evident; you’re just glowing. To try to bust out of that plateau I’d try adding mileage or speed training or more weight training. Muscles burn more fat. My trainer taught me to aim for three times a week. I’ve been struggling to do that lately and I can tell =) If you like Yoga I’d try Pilates. Awesome work out.
