This is part of my Family History Series, where I share the stories of my ancestors. Past posts of a genealogical nature have connected me with people in ways I never thought possible, and I’d like to see who else might get in touch with me as I post about those who are part of my family tree.

SARAH ANN CARTWRIGHT ALLEN
January 11, 1840…April 28, 1885
Sarah’s life story as recorded by L.Andersen, September 2, 2001
Sarah Ann Cartwright was born in Lancashire, England,January 11, 1840. Her parents were Thomas Henry Cartwright and Sarah Jane Yates Cartwright. She had one sister named Ellen. When Sarah Ann’s mother Sarah Jane was being baptized in England by Elder Pugmire the river was higher than usual due to a storm in the night and the bank gave way and Sarah Jane was drowned, this was November 23, 1843 (as detailed here). Sarah Ann’s father Thomas married Jane Allen on June 30, 1844. Thomas and aune, Sarah Ann and Ellen arrived in Utah August 30, 1850; they traveled with the Milo Andrus company. They settled near Cedar City and this is where Sarah Ann met Andrew Augustus Allen Sr. Son of Ira and Calista Bass Allen.
Andrew Sr. and Sarah were married at Cedar City on June 14, 1857. Their first child Andrew Augustus Allen Jr. was born April 25, 1858. In about 1860 Sarah and her husband Andrew Sr. and Andrew Jr. moved to Hyrum and settled in for the remainder of their life. Sarah and Andrew had 5 children, 3 boys and 2 girls. In 1872 Sarah’s son George Q. died after he was hurt at school, a pole had fallen and hit him in the head. And then in 1878 her oldest daughter Calista Ann died. That left her with 2 sons and 1daughter.

In 1878 Andrew and Sarah built a home with 7 rooms, they were very happy with this new home, but Sarah’s health had not been very good for years and then on April 28, 1885 she died. She had only been really sick for 2 days. Sarah is buried alongside Andrew and her 2 children who died young, George Q and Calista Ann in the Hyrum City Cemetery. Sarah was only 45 years old when she died.
As there has been nothing written about Sarah Ann Cartwright Allen I put this page together using information from Andrew her husbands diary and other information that I have in my possession. Sarah Ann is my Great Grandmother.

Oh! do you know the town she was born in? I served my mission in Lancashire and want to picture it in my head.
If you haven’t ever watched it, I highly recommend the BBC mini-series North & South, (not to be confused with the one by the same name about the Civil war). It gave me great insight into that time period of the industrial revolution and how harsh conditions were for the working class. I used to wonder if it was hard for emigrants to leave their nice homes and families to come to America, but after watching that I realized they were looking to better themselves, as well as come to Zion.
