Update: My Wonderful Walls is now offering a discount code to That Wife readers! Enter in the code “thatwife” during checkout anytime through November and you’ll receive 15% off your entire purchase. I’m tempted to use this myself and keep the farm scene stickers on hand for T1′s future bedroom…

The area above our couch recently went from looking like this….

To this, all thanks to My Wonderful Walls.

They offered to send me a wall sticker of my choice, and even though they are currently a company geared toward making stickers and stencils for decorating children’s rooms, I thought I could make the Classic Oak Family Tree Wall Sticker work in a more adult setting as well. Prepare for a picture heavy post below as I show you how it was done, but I have a giveaway waiting at the end for you so that you can choose ANY product from the My Wonderful Walls site to decorate your own room.

My Wonderful Walls is owned by Michael and Stephanie Goins out of Tennessee. They started their business after Michael hand-painted a mural in their older son’s new room. How could they give other parents (even artistically-challenged ones like me!) the opportunity to decorate a room in a similar way? That’s how My Wonderful Walls was born, a company that creates wall sticker kits, full-room stencil kits, and color-adjustable canvas art for decorating young children’s’ rooms and baby nurseries. (And hopefully as I’ve proven here, at least one of their stickers can work in your home even if you don’t have kids). I think the sunflowers and bees sticker could work in the right kitchen, don’t you? Someday when we settle, our kids are getting a farm sticker room. Or maybe I’ll get really ambitious and paint it using the stencils?

After I received my tree sticker, my first step was calling my friend Kristin of Bien Living Designs and offering to make lunch for her in exchange for some help getting the sticker on the wall. I thought this project was going to be really difficult, and having an interior designer around would be essential, but I was wrong. It was of course fun to have Kristin around (it’s always nice to have her around :) ), but My Wonderful Walls has really made this as easy as possible. First we unrolled the roll (on the coffee table at the bottom of the picture) and found the directions (sitting on the couch). The directions were essential because each piece of the tree was labeled with a number and so we were able to look at the paper, find piece 19, and stick it on the wall where they suggested it go.

The trunk came in multiple pieces, and is the only part I would suggest having a friend around to help you with, because you want to avoid letting the sticker fold in on itself (although if you do, it’s not the end of the world, as we accidentally let it happen once and were able to easily peel it apart).

I’ve used vinyl stickers in the past, several times, and this fabric wall cling from My Wonderful Walls is a completely different product. As I know from experience, the vinyl stickers you get off of places like Etsy (I actually ordered and used one for this project, which you’ll see in gold below) can be difficult to work with. They fold in on themselves very easily, and when that happens they are ruined. You also have to do your best at guessing how to position them

With the My Wonderful Walls fabric cling stickers we were able to re-position them at will. Not only that, the website claims I can peel this tree off the wall when we move, and put it back up again in our new place. That is probably my favorite part about this product, because for someone (like me) who moves frequently, large investments in one-time use home decor products isn’t very appealing.

After some debating, we decided not to use the fabric frames pictured on the website that came with the tree. I wanted to use the sticker in my own unique way. (Who me?) Once we had positioned and re-positioned everything just so (we varied from the suggested design just a bit) we took a moment to smooth it all down. This is yet another reason that these fabric wall cling stickers are superior to the vinyl stickers I’ve ordered from Etsy in the past. The Etsy stickers have to be painstakingly rubbed with a credit card to get them to stick to the wall properly. The My Wonderful Walls product was a simple peel, stick, and smooth. Done!

The baby approves.

The next step was ordering a vinyl sticker from VinylOnTheGo with a quote by Thomas S. Monson, a happy home is but an earlier heaven. I’ve used VinylOnTheGo several times in the past, love her customer service, but the user experience with the fabric wall cling stickers from My Wonderful Walls is far superior.

Then it was time for the part I was dreading. Figuring out how to hang up my frames. I sent out many, many tweets trying to figure out which arrangement would be best. My initial idea wasn’t cutting it.

After taking some online polls and conferring with That Husband, we decided to go with an arrangement that looks like this.

I then did all sorts of measuring and laser pointing to try to figure out where to put the nails so the frames would be evenly spaced.

Once I decided on the exact spot I drove my nails right through the kraft paper…

and then ripped the kraft paper off the wall. Ta-da! Nails all ready and waiting for my picture frames.

The finished product. The frames are a custom order from Rusty Mill, and I’m really happy with them.

Now you can see how it all comes together, our family tree.

I still have two pictures I need to scan in when I go home (you can see the right-middle picture is actually a family one because I don’t have a wedding shot of my parents), but from top to bottom, left to right we have:

TH’s maternal grandparents, TH’s paternal grandparents, my paternal grandparents, my maternal grandparents, TH’s parents, my parents, us, my sister and her husband, and TH’s sister and her husband.

Once I have all the correct photos it will be a wall of all the couples when they are young, happy, newlyweds. I plan to order more frames to keep for our children, and as they get married they will get to join us on the family tree newlywed wall! It’s been really fun to scan the photos and look for family resemblances, or talk about how wedding attire has changed over the years (as well as the photography!).

We’ve only had this tree up for a few weeks, but so far every single person we’ve invited into our apartment has asked us if we painted it on. They are all so impressed by it and can’t believe it’s a sticker! It’s a wonderful statement piece that I look forward to moving with us when we leave Chicago.

Let’s end with a few pictures of my sweet son surrounded by family members (albeit in photographic form :) ).

Now it’s time to give something away!

One of you is about to win ONE product from their entire collection ($20-$152 value).

Just follow the instructions in the Rafflecopter widget *exactly as I posted them*. If you don’t have kids, maybe this is something you could gift at a shower? I know I would be thrilled to be gifted something like this.
