Celery = Ick
Tonight, after driving to four different locations on the outskirts of Dallas to find a craft store (I don’t know why google has so many dead addresses on file), I arrived home around 8:00 pm to find That Husband had just arrived home also, and he was starving. It was bad. The situation became really bad when I realized that the rice cooker didn’t turn on when I walked out the door like I thought.
I had to think fast for dinner because he was already rummaging around in the kitchen asking about a pre-dinner snack. I decided on chicken salad sandwhiches and tomato soup. The chicken salad was made with chicken, tomatoes, celery, honeycrisp apple, mayonnaise, ginger, and garlic (and pretty good for right off the top of my head). The soup was my favorite kind of tomato, and I thought I had saved the day with my quick thinking.
Turns out I was wrong because TH hates celery. Hates it with a passion, and picked it out of his chicken salad like a little child. I couldn’t be mad at him for it because he was smart and thanked me for the dinner I had made before telling me he sort of hated it.
Then he mentioned that he had been thinking it would be nice to take a lunch to work with him the next day. I was a good wife and packed it up in a little tupperware container with pieces of bread safely packaged in a plastic bag, after removing all of the celery from the mix.
Then I was informed that I had packed his lunch incorrectly. He apparently does not have time at work to slap filling on pieces of bread and eat it. Also, assembling his lunch in such manner would not be considered “cool”. The sandwich must be put together before work, so that it can be eaten while hiding underneath a desk in an effort to keep anyone from knowing he didn’t order out (just kidding about the desk, but not about the sandwich having to be pre-assembled).
What happened to corporate wellness programs and an emphasis on personal wellness?
Oh, that sounds like a delicious dinner at least to me. Plus, celery is one of the few veggies I eat raw. I guess he can enjoy his soggy, celery-free, chicken salad sandwhich for lunch. Goodness, I’m already seeing that marriage has a steep learning curve. You seem very patient as I thing I might have thrown a few snappy remarks about “soggy bread” and “how do you not like celery”. Yes, Ryan is the patient one in our relationship

1I’m so cracking up at this!! Especially the “cool” part. I’d eat it Jenna
. It does sound delicious. I’m glad you can laugh about it and blog it to share with the rest of us!

2I love the things that you find out after you get married…Branden has learned that I always like a straw, no mayonnaise on my sandwich, and that I prefer my sandwiches toasted first. And the way he had to learn about it was similar to this… trial and error! However it’s worth it. It’s amazing when you get to a restaurant and you know exactly what ingredients that they should pull out of your husband’s food. It always makes me feel…. like he belongs to me. And I like that feeling. And now my husband orders better for me than I do.

3Ha! While I agree with That Husband on the celery in things (not that I’d put it in chicken salad since I don’t eat chicken, but I hate celery IN anything, I only eat it by itself), I think it’s so funny that he will only eat his lunch pre-assembled. Though, I guess my husband is pretty much the same way based on time constraints… if he can’t shove it in his mouth as he is running from patient to patient, it doesn’t get eaten at all.

4Sounds like TH is a diva about a pre-assembled lunch but in a weird way kinda sweet that he wants to look “cool”. My husband doesn’t like celery either - what’s with that? I think celery has a nice crisp crunch attached to it.
Just wait - TH will start grabbing food off your plate while you’re eating.

5haha that is too funny!! I am not a big celery fan either but my fiancé always puts it in his chicken salad. I pick it out without complaint… it’s funny the things you learn about each other once you start living together.

6Your chicken salad sounds amazing! (It’s a good thing I haven’t eaten breakfast yet, so I’m allowed to be hungry
)
That is rather entertaining though how he likes no celery and a “pre-packed” lunch. But I think it’s interesting to see how people’s quirks are revealed as you get to know them better.

7Mr. S is just like that! Every time I make him a lunch I make it in some sort of “uncool” way. (I threatened to get those bread press things that make your bread have smiley faces or I love you written on it if he kept calling me uncool
) I guess we will just have to be uncool wives together Jenna!

8I am so happy that my husband is not picky at all. He’ll try just about anything (aside from clams, but he loves calamari figure that one out) so we can do something off the wall when we feel like it or try really cool resturants.
I amt he pickier one as I hate mushy things, but just yesterday I made chili and I allowed him to have one can of his kidney beans in it. I’ve just gotten very good at picking them out.

11First off, I haven’t had breakfast so this post made me hungry! Your chicken salad sounds delicious!
One thing I have learned by living with my FI is that you never get to know your significan other completely. There is always something, even if you lived together for a long time, you still discover new things here and there.
The desk part was so funny!

12I will hate celery right along with TH. I would pick out like a little child too, and I am sure you know that!

13How come TH couldn’t make supper for the both of you if he got home first? just a thought
The onus is on the person who arrive home first to prepare dinner at out house…
Last week I prepared his lunch and packed everything soo neatly, it was obvious he didn’t pack it, and he was called out on it. It’s cute though, I was was kinda wishing someone said something about it tee hee! I even put Nick + Nat on the outside of the paper bag!

14In his defense those are pretty big celery pieces.

15kaymarie-There are about a billion ways that marriage has tested my patience, and we have been married less than one month still. We are both learning very very slowly.
kelli-I hope he doesn’t read this post, I don’t thtink he will get such a kick out of it
amanda-I can’t wait to get to that point in the relationship. I am a straw person as well. And he is European so he likes no ice.
Julie-I just don’t understand how you can work a job where you are THAT BUSY all the time. Well, I understand for Dr.’s but he is a consultant. Surely they take breaks sometimes throughout the day. Right?
skywalker-You make me thing of Friends. “Joey doesn’t share food!” That joke won’t even be funny at all to you unless you watch the show, LOL
budgetsavvy-In his defense, he did pick it out from his dinner without complaint. I thought it woudl be nice of me to pick it out for his lunch.
Bean-I think it’s good that we expected this kind of thing to happen. I knew there would be things we would learn about each other that we couldn’t possibly learn from dating.
Mrs.S.-The bread press sounds like the best surprise ever for him! I’m really thinking about torturing him with that one day!
blab-He actually isn’t that picky, as we try crazy things at restaurants as well. I think it’s the texture that he doesn’t like.
Silvia-I think that is the reason why we felt that it wasn’t necessary to live together before marriage, because we knew that even if we did it for 10 years we never would have known absolutely everything about each other.
Shaylene-You would!
Pinky-Putting Nick + Nat on the outside is so funny! That absolutely would not go over well in our house. Why do I cook for him? Because he makes all the money. Cooking the meals is the only way I can pay him back for all of his hard work I think.
Single Girl-I think it’s trick photography

16I make Mr. T’s lunch everyday! If he likes the chicken salad, you can also switch it up for lunch with rotini or penne for a pasta salad.
He has become really sick of blueberry yogurt lol. I thought he liked it, but I guess I overdid it. :/
I’m impressed by your quick thinking for dinner!

17taffy-That just might be the answer. I need something he can eat cold so he doesn’t have to take the time to warm it up. Apparently there isn’t enough time for that at his work. They are slave drivers, they are.

18Mr. T won’t heat anything up because he refuses to use microwaves!!! It has made things interesting in the kitchen, I have always used microwaves to heat up leftovers. We need to get a good toaster oven soon, I don’t even want to see our gas bill from using the gas oven so much!

19Taffy-He doesn’t believe in microwaving! How would he feel if I told you that TH’s mother in Poland doesn’t even have a stove, she just uses the microwave for everything!

20De-lurking because this post reminded me of my parents! After they got married my mom made my dad’s lunch and on the third day he complained about what she had packed and she retaliated. She has never packed my dad a lunch since, and they have been married for 33 years! Maybe now I see where I get my stubborn streak from!
