Workin’ the Bee

Posted by Jenna, Under Work

I’ve been moping around the house a little bit because my job just ended and I’m bummed. I didn’t write about it before, but I was working for Weddingbee as a temporary editor for a few weeks. The job description seemed simple, just upload posts as they are written and published by the “Bees”, but WOW, running that website is a whole lot of hard work. Kudos to Bee, Penguin, BIL Bee, and Mr. Bee for keeping things running as efficiently as they do.

I was working the Noon-5 pm shift, which got a little stressful at times since most of the Bees seem to do their publishing in the evening. Bee and Penguin were always available to answer all of my questions, and were so patient with my ridiculously slow learning.

It was, in short, my dream job. I’m an English major, so I felt like I was using that a little bit (even though it made me realize on a daily basis just how horrible my grammar is!), and I was getting paid to read and edit posts I had already been reading on a daily basis! I’ll just have to keep hoping that something opens up again for me in the future.

So far in my life I have:

1. Driven tractor during cherry harvest in the middle of summer, working the 3 am to 2 pm shift.

2. Worked as a secretary/maid in a fitness club. Wiping down sweaty machines all day is not fun.

3. Worked as a secretary in the tennis club at Gold’s Gym. Still don’t understand the game at all.

4. Played with the cutest little kids all day as a nanny.

5. Had a brief stint as a therapist for a little boy with severe autism.

6. Worked for BYU catering and started to gain weight while eating out of the free-for-all leftover fridge.

7. Worked at a nursing home giving the grumpy old paraplegic showers and such in an attempt to stay in Provo instead of moving home.

8. Began working at Cave B as a waitress. Loved the food, hated the 40 minute drive.

9. Worked at Magleby’s restaurant where I fought the daily fight not to indulge in 20 cheese rolls. Oh, those cheese rolls.

10. Worked at Cave B again.

11. Worked for BYU catering again. Was planning on getting married soon so I didn’t eat so much this time around.

12. Worked as a secretary for a lawyer in Dallas. Learned I do NOT want to ever be a secretary.

13. Worked for Cave B again.

14. Worked for Weddingbee as an editor for 6 weeks.

You better believe that a few of these never made it onto my resume. :)

As of right now, I’m not job hunting, but depending on opportunities for school that could change in the near fugure.

What’s the best job you’ve ever had? What’s the worst?

  1. Congrats on your stint with Wedding Bee! That is definitely awesome :)

I’ve had a handful of really cool jobs … its so hard to say what was my favorite. Some of the more memorable - I’ve been a summer camp director where I got to teach drama and! baton twirling, a ropes course instructor at college, I worked on the Sydney Olympics for Nbcolympics.com, and now I get to lead retreats (in addition to working in advertising).

The worst, hands down, was being an HR Assistant at a local network of homeless shelters. It’s hard admitting that was my least favorite; I went into it with the most noble hopes but the job was ill defined and my boss was a control maniac. I left after 3 months after being yelled at for taking a 30 minute lunch (instead of an hour). I learned that while my heart yearns to help others, I needed to find a way to do that that matches up with my passion and my talents. And that the journey always includes many winding paths full of hidden surprises.

  2. My favorite job I ever had — I used to teach riding lessons at my barn, and then all summer at a resident camp for 3 summers while I was in high school. I was getting paid to do something I LOVED and to teach girls to love something that I loved. Plus, in between lessons, I got to ride for free as much as I wanted at camp. The only downside with the resident camp was, of course, since I lived there for 10 weeks, I had to leave behind MY horse all summer… but it did make me a better rider to switch between 30-something other horses on a regular basis.

My least favorite job? What I do now! Being a Ph.D. student/laboratory slave is miserable! I only hope it is worth it for the opportunities it will bring me in the future!

  4. I’m going to list them, or I’ll never keep this straight:
    (1) Pizza place — two weeks, then quit.
    (2) Einstein Bagel Bros. — two years. Best job, but worst people to work with. I got passed for promotion twice. Once for the managers girlfriend who had been working there 3 days. Once for her best friend who’d been working there a month.
    (3) Buffalo Wild Wings- it was a job, I hated it.
    (4) Office Depot- temp work. I got really tired of seeing people scam the deals and think that I was stupid enough to not catch it/say anything.
    (5) Little Ceasers Pizza — I hated the job, but it was easy enough. The area that I worked in housed a great deal of immigrants so not many people spoke English. They did, however, expect me to understand when they were screaming at me in Arabic.
    (6) Rio Wraps- where I’m at now. I hired on for 20 hours a week making sandwhiches. Currently I am working 10 hours a week washing dishes. My boss refuses to train me or let me train myself. It’s easy but I really do want out, now. Ten minutes ago. Never started. Something like that :)

Sorry for the book length comment! Basically, I’ve never had a job that I truly liked, but Bagels was the best one, and it’s a toss up between Little Ceasers and Rio Wraps for the worst :)

  5. Be careful even hinting to your friends that you know how to edit or use grammar. I let on in college and I wound up reading everyone papers, it was almost common for me to hear at night “Hey are you busy?” followed by “Would you mind editing my comma ridden past tense mess of an essay?”

As for me my worst and probably best job was the same, I was a kennel attendant for 2 years. I got to clean up poop and various other body fluids from sick cats and dogs, hold very evil pets that were in no mood to have their nails trimmed/take a bath/put up with someone holding them/

But at the same time I got to play with puppies, walk and feed some really nice dogs, and pet kitties whenever I felt like it.

  6. Wow, Jenna! I am amazed that you have had so many jobs, my list is much shorter, but the worst job ever:… (for me at least)….

A pestcontrol salesWoman!!! Yes I was a solicitor. It was the hardest job I ever had. Walking door to door in the heat of the summer wearing a ugly uniform…talking about bugs all day. Even though this was the hardest job and least favorite job I have ever had, I actually learned a ton about it and was really proud of myself for working so hard and being so successful. It actually paid for an entire year of school/food/rent/shopping.

I did this one summer in hopes to see my boyfriend (now husband) more frequently. So I joined the same company that he worked for. Although we didn’t go door to door together we had the same hours and drove to work together and were able to enjoy our weekly office incentive dinners together.

  7. Best Job: Dj at a radio station in college. I went in for the receptionist position, they got me confused with another interviewee and gave me an on-air test. I thought it was weird that they gave me cue cards to read on-air….do they do that to all receptionists? Anyways, I did well. I was offered my own show after about 30 minutes….and I was like WAIT! No! Im here to interview to answer phones! As fate would have it….I met Bryan while I was at that job!
Worst Job: I was a hostess at a steakhouse for about 17 minutes…I sat a couple at a table in a section without a server and they were sitting there for about 20 minutes without even a beverage. FIRED!

  8. Paula-I would love to work for a non-profit, but I have yet to find something that I really really love.

Julie-I think you are going to do amazing things when you graduate.

fritz-Thankfully, I have never had to work at a job that involves toilet cleaning.

kaymarie-I’m so happy to feel like I am done with “retail” or “food” jobs. Who knows what will happen in the future, but hopefully I will find jobs using my English degree sometime soon.

blab-Yeah, my grammar is actually not that great. I’m sure any grammarians reading this blog already knew that though.

njfindlay-Everyone I know who has worked sales/pest control has said that it is the worst thing ever. I’m so glad I never did it! The money is so tempting though. I’m sure you were smiling your way into everyones homes.

Mandy-No Way! Wow, what a dream job. And I can’t believe they fired you on your first day so quickly! Hostessing can be a little bit overwhelming.
