I love to sleep under lots of blankets. If you come over to our house you might hear That Husband saying something about “the weight of a thousand blankets.” It’s this strange inside joke we have developed between the two of us after I told him about sleeping at my Grandma Moo’s house in the waterbed underneath a pile of handmade quilts. Something about the weight was so soothing, and ever since then I have loved to sleep with lots of blankets on.
Unfortunately I also get really hot while sleeping, so I have to keep the temperature low to be able to keep covered by said blankets. We can’t have the window open because we live right next to the street with loud cars driving by all night, and we won’t use the air conditioning because we would rather spend it on things like a metal DDR pad worth several hundred dollars (yep, it’s being built for us right this very moment).
The ceiling fan would be a good option, if we could turn it up high enough for it to be effective. Unfortunately, when placed on the highest setting it shakes like a tahitian dancer. I have visions of us sleeping peacefully one night, only to be hacked to pieces by the spinning blades of death.

This video does not even do the shaking justice. Whenever one person turns the fan on while the other is lying in bed their previously restful state immediately becomes one of great agitation as they curl their legs up toward the window and yell out “Turn it down, it’s going to fall!” Yes, both the husband and the wife particpate in such displays of cowardice.
You would think that apartment complexes would have some kind of checklist called “Potential lawsuit waiting to happen” and they would go through each apartment to quickly assess the probability of being sued. Who turns this fan on, watches it turn so violently, looks at the checklist and thinks “Fan of death? Wonderful addition to our new apartments!”

You live in an apartment complex that you rent and not a condo that you own, right? I would talk to your apartment manager about that — just ask if you can get someone to check out the stability of it. While we never had ceiling fans in our house growing up (doesn’t get hot enough), we had them in every single room in our shore home, and even at their highest settings, they never shook. That is crazy! They should be able to come take a look at it and just make sure it is properly anchored in and give you the okay to either use it at its highest settings, or re-anchor it.

OMG, that sounds like my FH. We have two snow dogs (husky and shiba) and then he claims to have a low core body temp - so its like 60 all the time in our condo. My mom’s last visit she told me the low temp could affect my fertility. GO Figure! Lol
We have one of those fans from BB&B, its not an AC fan but oscillating and it blows cool air. Maybe you can try that. It’s a stand up!

For someone who has actually had a ceiling fan fall on them while they were sleeping, I agree with Julie. Now…nothing did happen -it literally fell on our feet (and thank goodness not our faces), but it was a little frightening to say the least!

I’ve always been terrified of ceiling fans. In fact, I will only turn my on the lowest setting in order to maintain air flow. I’d rather be hot and suffer than turn a ceiling fan past setting one. I know, I’m a freak, but those things terrify me!
Is there anyway you or TH can get up there and try to stabilize it somehow? Or if that voids your lease somewhow, get a worker at your complex to make it not so scary? For the meantime, maybe invest in some floor fans

I’m with you - I love, love, love (!) to sleep with lots of blankets. But unfortunately sleeping next to someone else with lots of blankets leaves me ridiculously hot, sweaty and unable to sleep. So this predicament almost is making me excited for really cold (<-30 degrees Celsius) weather so that we can actually use our duvet without dying of heat!
The ceiling fan at my parent’s cabin shakes on it’s highest speed and it has never fallen. But then again, it’s also not above people who are sleeping. Maybe get that checked out as I don’t think that they should shake!

I Love sleeping in the cold and ALWAYS have the fan on. I would DIE if I couldn’t have it turned up high. Your video made me laugh, the fan in my parents guest room does that and every time I am DEATHLY afraid it will fall, I even hate putting my hand up close to it due to an irrational fear it will cut me….I know, I’m weird. I make my little sister change the speed on it! I figure that is what little sisters are for right?

I have the same exact fear about ceiling fans. I never hear about anyone dying or being injured because of a ceiling fans, with the exception of that poor Jewish bride on youtube. Freaks me out.

OK we sleep with both a fan and a air purifier on. Partly because I like the white noise, partly because I like the air movement. And, then the purifier because of someone’s allergies.
That thing looks a little perilous. I’d have it checked out

A ton of blankets? I personally don’t need a lot blankets - I have a heater that sleeps next to me - the hubs. I agree, get a stand up fan for sleeping because not only will you worry about the ceiling fan then you won’t rest.
Good luck.

I like sleeping when it’s about 76 degrees. I usually turn my hotel room up to like 78 when I’m alone!! I am probably going to be miserable sleeping when I get married because I’m pretty sure I’ll never find a guy like that! But I love tons of blankets too…mostly because I’m just always cold!

Mr. M and I also have issues with our sleeping issues… and I see a dual-sided heating blanket in our near future. As for the fan, you might want to try rebalancing it…. and it won’t seem like it’s falling off the ceiling!
you can use pennies, or you can buy a cheap little kit at Home Depot/Lowe’s/etc.

I agree with the 1st poster! Definitely call your apartment office and have them fix it. We had the shaky ceiling fan issue when we moved into our current place. Apparently the previous renters had installed said fan, but maintenance still fixed it and now it works great!

Yes, we live in a rented apartment complex, so it shoudln’t be hard for us to just call and have maintenance take a look at it. Once I get off my bum and stop being so lazy that is.
That Husband cannot understand my addiction to sleeping with as many blankets as possible, but it sounds like there are lots of others that feel the same way.
Kim-I swear you are the ultimate DIY queen. I need to start doing some Internet research to figure out how to fix this.
Chitown-I never should have let That Husband read your comment. It has only escalated his fear (I think he is more scared of it than I am!)
Big Shot-I am not even going to look that video up for fear of being scared for life.
