I think it’s no secret that I am into photography. Like really into it. But I lack a dSLR. And subjects.
The dSLR I still don’t have (How annoying would advertising be on here if it was all in the name of a dSLR for That Wife? Just kidding. Sort of.), but I did finally find a subject. The kind of subject that never says “Don’t take my picture I look awful!” Also the kind of subject that never stays still.
The day ended up being cloudy and grey, the kind of weather that’s great for shoots outside because of the lack of direct sunlight, but bad for inside shoots with a baby because (as I learned) you need lots of light to keep from having to turn to a slow shutter speed.
Here are the passable photos I came up with. Unfortunately I find myself resorting to the amateurish tactic of turning photos black and white to compensate for lack of light and their grainy appearance. Someday I will move past this.
The camera kept focusing on the red and white stripes in his shirt. Is this why photogs like to take pictures of naked babies? I assume it would prevent this. Using manual focus was almost impossible with all the wiggling he was doing.
Closeup shots of little baby body parts are always cute right? Nope, not true in this case. He actually has very cute little hands, but I somehow managed to turn his into THE CLAW. Remember, the claw from Liar Liar? That is what I think of when I see this picture. I think I’ll try a shot of his cute little toes next time.
Sweet sleeping baby, please let me come back again on a sunny day to give this another try.
Don’t worry honey, it’s over.
Glad to have my first photo shoot ever out of the way. I expect (hope! pray! plead!) that they will only get better from here.

I kind of dig the shot of “The Claw.” It’s an interesting perspective tweak, I know baby hands are tiny, but this one looks pretty big. The last photo is gorgeous, you have a very cute subject.

Jenna-
I was unsure if I should leave a comment her or on ThatBride since I’m not sure how long you will continue to update and check the other site. I just wanted to let you know that I was amazed to stumble across your wedding planning site since you incorporated many of the elements that I am thinking of doing (and I thought I was being original! Oh well, you know what they say: It’s hard to be original but it’s so easy to just be yourself). I wanted to let you know that I enjoyed viewing your photos and reading your blog entries. You had an amazing wedding day and it looks like you have a solid relationship that will lead to a long and beautiful marriage. I wish you all the best and hope that you don’t mind me lurking on your site(s).
P.S. Your wedding dress was spectacular. It was so timeless and classy. You took something that was already beautiful and made it even more gorgeous. Perhaps you should go into dress designs, yes, no?

I don’t know if photgraphers like to share their tips and secrets of the tread or not. But if so, there is a photographer’s whose blog I love to check out and she does a lot of family and kid’s portraits. Check it out and maybe you can get in touch and learn a few tricks.

Oh and what does dSLR mean?

dSLR means digital single lens reflex. It’s basically saying “I have a fancy camera that I can mount a flash on and change lenses.” The difference in quality with dSLR cameras is so huge because of the way they process light.
As you can see I’ve been doing a bunch of research on the topic since I’m trying to convince That Husband why I really need one.

Thank you for the explanation. I guessed it had to do with photography but it’s always nice to understand the little details…
Hey maybe you should use this as a graduation present idea

Convincing him that you need the camera is just the first step. I’m currently trying to figure out how to convince the hubs (whose only knowledge of photography is about the expense of it) that I need a new lens. Unemployment is not working in my favor.

Awe, he looks so cute when he’s sleeping.
It’s amazing how much they wiggle isn’t it? I like the last one where it looks like he’s peeking in at you to see what you’re doing. You caught a lot of intelligence in that little look you wouldn’t expect from a baby that young.

Jenna, I find it so very refreshing that you’ve posted these pictures. They’re still lovely in my opinion, but it seems you don’t think quite as highly and it is so awesome that you choose to say “Hey! At least I found a subject!.
Nonetheless, what an adorable child (aren’t they all?).

[...] You’ve seen Baby Camdon before. The photos below prove what some good light and a nice camera can do. I’m proud to say that none of these photos were shot on auto (yay!). All of my practice using the G9 on manual has really helped me to understand what all of the settings mean. I still shoot lots of “test” shots and play with the settings, but the majority of the time I’m shooting on aperture or manual. I would shoot manual all the time but I can’t figure out how to change both the aperture and the shutter speed, I seem to only be able to change either/or. I guess I need to read the manual. [...]
