Belated V-Day Love

Posted by Jenna, Under Holiday, Married Life

I love belated Valentines Day so much more than on-time Valentines Day.

These flowers? They were free (due to a cashier error). Even if they weren’t free, they would have only cost $10. Did you hear that? $10 teeny, tiny little dollars. I bought ice cream cones that cost almost that much while I was in Vegas.

Now I have 12 pretty flowers to look at, and one big vase to keep.

And there was a second surprise after the flowers! I have been wanting to buy The Scarlet Pimpernel for years, but I’ve been unable to find the exact copy our creepy history teacher in high school used to show us when he didn’t feel like teaching anything. I got so excited when I saw this at Costco a few weeks ago, but the price tag was enough that I knew buying it would bust our entertainment budget for several months. That Husband saw how excited I got and bought it for me as a V-Day surprise.

Now I have:

Pride & Prejudice

Victoria & Albert

Emma

Jane Eyre

Lorna Doone

Tom Jones

Ivanhoe

and my personal favorite The Scarlet Pimpernel.

We’re going to be Pimping out tonight with some homemade ice cream. (Did you like how I did that thing with the Pimpernel and the Pimping? I thought it was cool of me. I’m usually against using the term “pimping” because of the awful connotations, but I thought I was being quite clever here.)

Scarlet Pimpernel? I must live under a rock.

This is the second version of the movie that I own. It’s STILL not the one I watched in high school, but I love it anyways. Apparently it was a three-part series, so I’m excited to watch the other two parts sometime!

  3. Okay after watching that I can see why they chose Hugh Laurie to play the part in Black Adder the Third. He was a great Scarlett Pimpernel in his own goofy way.

And there’s a young Ian McKellen. That man is amazing. I don’t know as much about the history as I’d like but I am curious about the French Revolution. We may just have to look for it for Netflix, thanks Jenna.

  4. Jenna, you sly dog. I liked the Pimping myself.

  5. I would like to point out it was a cashier gift that got us the flowers for free. I just really dislike when people walk away from cashier errors in their favor, except for maybe in Monopoly.

  6. I love belated or early valentine’s. To me it’s the one that means the most. Were there isn’t a commercial obligation to feel, just the one of the heart.

  7. I love Scarlet Pimpernel! It’s been a long-time family favorite movie. My mom got us all 4 of the kids in our family the DVDs one year for Christmas and it was one of the best presents ever. It’s hard to find - enjoy!

  8. I’m totally late on this, but:

    A) I love, love, love the Pride and Prejudice miniseries with Colin Firth. I’m very rarely “girly”, but that series turns me to complete mush every time. Sigh.

    B) We also watched the Scarlet Pimpernel in high school (French class… yeah, learned a lot of French), and it was a fave, but I’m not sure what version it was. Not the one with Jane Seymour, I don’t think.

    C) TH is cute, especially with his disclaimer. We didn’t suspect any wrongdoing, TH!

    D) That is definitely not Hugh Laurie in this clip. But he was a hilarious Prince in Black Adder.
