Happy Halloween!

Posted by Jenna, Under Holiday

Last night we attended a church activity where they were hosting a cupcake walk (don’t you love cake walks?) and so I turned to Kissing Cupcakes for some inspiration for the cupcakes I had signed up to bring. She pointed me toward these super-simple candy corn cupcakes and TH can attest that I squealed loudly many times while icing them because I thought they were so dang cute! I used this recipe for the chocolate cupcakes and the icing and then just dyed two bowls of icing orange and yellow and piped the colors on one-by-one. I took home an empty cupcake carrier at the end of the night so I think they were a hit!

TH and I are doing the same thing we did last year on Halloween night, staying home in our sweats and watching a scary movie while we carve pumpkins. I really wanted to dress up at some point though, so I used the ward party as an excuse to make TH dress up in some way. There was no way I was going to get him into what one normally thinks of when they think “costume” so I went the witty route.

The signs were a hit with That Husband, and everyone else who read them so I’m thinking I’m going to have to work hard to come up with something similar each year! I’m excited to carve pumpkins tonight, as it is one of my favorite holiday rituals and I always get really into it. (See this photo of my 2007 pumpkin, and this one from 2008.) I’m thinking something baby themed this year as we did the wedding theme last year?

Yup, we are staying in too.
My family tradition was to turn on scary music, go trick-or-treating (until we got too old) decorate the house for the spooky festivities, pass out candy, and watch cheesy scary movies…

When my husband and I were dating- we carved HIS FIRST Pumpkin- and roasted the pumpkin seeds. I couldn’t believe he had never carved a pumpkin!!!

But now that we are married- I am going to introduce my hubby to those cheesy scary movies: Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein etc. We are also working on a home improvement project which is going to be a joint ‘Christmas present’ to each other! :o) So hopefully we’ll get trick-or-treater’s while fixing up the house… and end the day curled up with some good clean ole comedy compliments Abbot and Costello. =o)

  3. It’s 2 a.m. in LA, I’ve been working on my thesis research for the past 5 hours, but this was a great comedy break- those costumes are awesome! And I hope it’s not inappropriate to say it, but TH looks really good with a little scruff :) You guys are adorable! Back to the grindstone- already wrote 9 pages today, getting 6 more done before I hit the hay. Happy Halloween!

  4. Oh I love the “costumes” you’re making me want to do the same.
This year I’m going to dress as a French cliché, pretty appropriate for me. And I’m trying to get my husband to dress up as an American cliché. Hopefully he will agree and we’ll be able to have some good pictures.
The cupcakes look great. I made chocolate chip pumpkin cookies last night for the parties we are going to.

Ah, Cecy those are my favorite kind of cookies- I found a vegan recipe on, off all places, The Pioneer Woman and I’ve easily made 5 batches in the last month to give away.

    Cécy Reply:

Mine is not a vegan recipe. I found it on an other French expat blog and she herself got it from a lady she went to church with when she lived in New England.
They taste more like mini cakes than cookies though :)
I just brought a huge batch to work because I forgot the box at home when we went to the party.

  7. Those are really cute cupcakes! I was debating trying to make cake pops for a party we’re going to tonight. (homework? What homework?)

Mr. Bean and I both really enjoyed your costumes. Clever costumes like that are so awesome.

  9. Those cupcakes are super cute! I’m making some decorated sugar cookies tonight while the hubs and I chill and watch football all night. :)

  10. I love costumes that make you think! You two are so cute! We too are staying in for the evening - makes me feel better that we aren’t the only ones! :) I had the perfect idea for a costume though, veil, boquet, bee wings and a stinger and the number 2 - Bride to Beeee! Oh well :) Happy Halloween!

We’re staying in tonight as well. My fiance is a huge Oregon Ducks fan so we will be watching the Ducks vs. Trojan game and hoping for a win. I wanted to dress up this year, but ultimately I ran out of time. I realized yesterday, it would have been cool to be “Flo” from the Progressive commercials. Oh well.

also it’s funny that you did candy corn cupcakes. I have a friend who did a different take on it with orange, white, and yellow batter layered to look like candy corn.

We’re about to go see “This is it.” My guy isn’t all that excited, but I am super curious. I feel better about going … we got a 2 for 1 special on the tickets :)

Cute costumes, and the cupcakes look to-die-for!

Did you or TH win any cupcakes that were especially yummy?

  18. I am so impressed at your icing piping ability!!!

PS - Your posts on fun family activities with your Church make me want to be LDS. Or at least have my church be as supportive and family-oriented as yours! What a cool activity. I’ve heard of cake walks, but never been.

  19. What cute cupcakes! I’m definitely going to try those next year. (Especially since we just bought a Kitchenaid Artisan Mixer with leftover wedding gift cards! Wheeee! Sorry, I feel the need to tell everyone about this.)

  23. Such a cute idea for a costume! I don’t know how to show you a picture, but we also carved pumpkins and I did almost the same mermaid carving this Halloween with my hubby!

    Jenna Reply:

I think the Little Mermaid one was my favorite pumpkin I’ve done so far. How fun!
