It’s that magical time of year again… General Conference time! (Forgotten what this means? Read this post for a refresher.) If you’ve ever been curious what the LDS Church teaches (and how it’s done, as I think our leaders have a pretty unique style compared to other religious denominations I”ve seen), it’s broadcast on tv, radio, and the internet and I’d love for you to take a moment to listen in. Clicking here will take you to the audio and video streams online.
There are two hour sessions Saturday morning, Saturday evening, Sunday morning, and Sunday evening. Broadcast time zone information can be found here. I’ll be jotting down my thoughts about the things heard in four separate posts over the weekend (one for each session), and tweeting about the messages as well (hashtag #ldsconf). Enjoy! (I know I will.)
5 new temples announced! Brigham City, Florida, Chile, Japan, Brazil. Hearing about new temple locations is my favorite part of conference.
Elder Osguthorpe talked about teaching and how it “saves lives”. It was an interesting new take on that phrase and I like how he used examples from his life to show how the teachers in his life saved his life by steering him in the right direction. I hope to do the same thing for my children, and in my church callings.
Elder Bednar’s talk on showing love has me thinking about showing my love and appreciation for my parents even after I am grown and out of the house. I’m grateful to have a spouse who shows, daily, how much he loves me. He urged us to bear our testimony more often to those we love, something I’m still not comfortable doing with people face-to-face.
Elder Uchtdorf began his talk by discussing different ways the Church is perceived by those outside of it. Reminded us that we have some funny primary songs, about talking streams and popcorn that grows on trees (all children in the Church know and love to sing the words “I looked out the window and what did I see? Popcorn popping on the apricot tree!) “God does not need us to love Him, but oh, how we need to love God.” We aren’t righteous because we fear God, we follow His commandments because we love Him.

Saw two LDS missionaries (with nametags) on the NYC subway tonight. As a non - LDS follower, I felt self conscious but smiled and asked how they were enjoying hearing the message from the conference! Love that you share this with us & that I could share it with them!

I’m originally from Brigham City, and my family still lives there. We were so excited to hear that we are getting a temple.
