Oh my goodness how I love seeing all of my planning come together…
I’ll tell you all about my hair and makeup drama when I get the rest of the photos back. It was a good splurge for me though. I felt so pretty!
TH came for a small portion. We nuzzled extensively and then and attempted to fly a kite from the dollar store.
My “field of pinwheels”! I love love love how this idea of mine turned out.
Balloons are so overdone when it comes to portrait sessions, but now I see why. Canvas worthy, no?
All credit for these goes to the adorable and incredibly talented Bethany Jackman. I’m both sad and glad she’s moving so soon. Her move to Boston is what is spurring her to edit these so quickly, but it means we aren’t going to be able to hang out (as we should, Bethany and I are really good together). More photos to come soon!

Well, thanks a lot Jenna because I was kind of starting to think that maternity photos were an unecessary expense, and I didn’t want my future children to be jealous if we only decided to do them for the first pregnancy, but looking at these I really want to do them again! I’m glad you found such a good photographer - a lot of the ones around here want to be “artsy” and take pictures of you naked (you know, the kind where you have one arm over your boobs and the other under your stomach) which I’m not into. But yours are so fun!

Althought the balloons may be “overdone” in the portrait world, they won’t look “overdone” in your house or in your baby’s album. They are awesome! And she did a great job of capturing the pinwheels in your pinwheels on the hill shot.
Overall - lovely!

I’m with you… the idea has been overdone in the photography world, but when I thought of how sweet it would be framed in our little girl’s nursery, I just couldn’t help it!

Seriously though, do you think your unborn child is really going to want to see these? I think these photos are more for you than for anyone else. It seems like a strange way to spend your time and money, when you so often remind us how busy you are and how limited your resources are. What does TH think?

I’m guessing you are going to be really sad to learn that A. I didn’t do these for baby and B. the shoot was free (the disc of images too!). Take that sucker! And you thought you were so sneaky with your thinly veiled sarcasm and trolldom.

So the hair and makeup was free? What about the many props you purchased? Were those free as well?
I think that just because someone disagrees with your choices, that does not make them a troll.
And what does TH think about the money spent on hair, makeup, outfits, and the props? (Not being a troll, I am wondering…)

SERIOUSLY!??!!?!?!?
What is the implication here? That no one should EVER EVER spend money on anything? Rice and beans and a little shack, or is that too much for you? I mean, where do you get off… I’m blocking your IP you jerk, and the other girl as well. I’m sick of people like you and I’m done dealing with your crap. Get a life.

I think it is sad you don’t think the baby would want to see these at some point! I have a picture of my mom that is just a candid someone took when she was prego with me and it is one of my favorite! She looks so happy in the picture and it is fun to see it and know she was carrying me! I personally wish I had some more of my mom like that but she always tried to hide from the camera when she was pregnant.

I don’t think that someone disagreeing with Jenna makes them a troll. But the thing is, this person was a troll, linking to an advertising site. If Jenna was blocking every person who disagreed with her choices, there’d be half the number of readers she has, but blocking people who are simply being facetious is perfectly justified. Especially when it is just plain mean.
Jenna, I would love to see more photos of my mother when she was pregnant with me - but unfortunately she was super ill with kidney issues so there aren’t many. As I said before, you look gorgeous.

wow! people are so weird! Why would anyone care how Jenna spent her money? Why is it any of our concern?.
Did anyone ever teach you manners? Didn’t you learn to not ask people how much the make, how the spend their money, etc?? What a rude thing to say. I think some people just get off on “stirring the pot” .

While the earlier commenters expressed their opinions in a rude and inappropriate way, they did bring up a few questions I’d like to know the answers to. Because some of the posts on TW are about how TW and TH are frugal and don’t have money to spend on certain things, I am curious as to why you decided to spend precious resources on outfits, hair, makeup, etc. for this shoot.

well, being pregnant with your first child is a pretty once-in-a-lifetime kind of event. I know if money could buy me a different way to tell my husband I was pregnant (I wanted something cute, but it ended up being “I’m afraid you’re pregnant” / “Yeah, I am” / “holy crap what are we gonna do?”), that I would spend it. Family and children are at the center of That Family’s life, so why shouldn’t they set out some resources to record and cherish the expectation of their first child in a medium that is very significant to Jenna? That’s my take on it, anyway.

Jeez…what is with people? It’s not like Jenna and TH are starving because she chose to do a maternity shoot-she has made it quite clear that they are frugal to save their money. What’s wrong with a little splurge for something so memorable? Especially since these items are things most people would just buy on a whim (clothes) or pay for on a regular basis (hair/makeup)

Hannah Reply:

I think it is kind of obvious - because she is pregnant, with her first child, and she wants to celebrate that.
As Marissa C said, it looks to me that those props would have been things Jenna could have gotten super cheaply. As for the hair and makeup - some people do that every weekend for a night out on the town. Jenna didn’t even do that for her wedding!
Judging from Jenna’s budgeting posts, I imagine eating out and other entertainment budgets will be cut to account for this expense. That’s what budgeting is - opportunity costs. Buy one thing to buy less of another - how they do that doesn’t make them any less frugal.
Frugality doesn’t have to mean living on beans and rice, not having or doing anything nice (ever). That would be a pretty sad and boring life, wouldn’t it?

I also don’t think that TH & TW don’t ‘have’ the money to spend on these things. I think a lot of the time they choose not to with a focus on saving. So maybe this month, they chose to save a little less to spend money on this.

I’ve been brainstorming for this session for months, and I somehow got the idea to center on this theme of “childhood nostalgia”, using cheap colorful childhood items (I kind of wanted to get a hula hoop but I needed to limit myself at some point
). I’m also all about trying to think of things that I haven’t seen done anywhere else before, and the pinwheels were something I hadn’t seen!
