I tried to make these giveaways as universal as possible, but of the thirteen things I came up with I couldn’t resist making one of them a gift certificate to a local Dallas shop. That Husband and I take our cakes/cupcakes very seriously, and we were convinced that we would never find anything as delicious as the cake we had at our wedding from a bakery called Simply Desserts (best cake in Seattle, btw, go go go!). Some time spent on Yelp led me to Society Bakery, apparently voted one of the Top 10 places to get a mouth watering cupcake by the Ellen Degeneres show.
Ellen and her fans were right. I don’t think I could find anything better in all of Texas, and I think you’ll love them too. The ladies behind the counter will tell you that red velvet is the crowd favorite and it doesn’t disappoint!
This is a local bakery, with only one location in Dallas, so you’ll need to either be located in Dallas, plan on visiting in the future, or know someone in the area who you would like to gift this certificate to. To enter to win a $10 gift certificate to Society Bakery, answer the question below:
Where are the best cupcakes in your area? (Doesn’t matter where you are located, I’ll keep your favorites in mind if I ever visit the area where you live!)
Comments close at 11:59 pm on 2/25/2010, and the winner will be announced on Saturday. Entries that don’t answer the question will be deleted because I like when people follow directions.

Don’t enter me in the drawing, since I’m on the east coast and wouldn’t be able to use the gift certificate. But if you’re ever in Philadelphia, you must visit Naked Chocolate Cafe. It’s a sinfully delicious shop, stock full of bon-bons, warm chocolate-y drinks, and cupcakes.
Another great place is Brown Betty Petite. Delish.
I think cupcake shops must be a new fad. There are about three other ones, which have just popped up in the city. I haven’t tried them all yet. But they are of course on my list!

I live in Dallas! Well, I live in a suburb of Dallas, but am but a freeway away from Society Bakery!
I consider myself to be a cupcake connoisseur — I seek out new places to eat cupcakes. Before the ring was on my finger, I told the boy that we were having cupcakes at our wedding no questions asked.
I think the best cupcakes I’ve had locally come from Sprinkles, even though they’re a chain of sorts (if you consider like 5 stores across the country a chain). I am completely in love with their coconut and red velvets. It’s always a special treat to get to go there for a cupcake, and the last time I was there, I even bought a doggie cupcake for our puppy Winston

Well, I’m in Austin, not Dallas, but my fiance’s family lives in Dallas so we visit pretty often! That cupcake looks amaaaazing!
Best cupcakes in Austin are DEFINITELY at Be My Cupcake - they’re doing my wedding. They started off as a little shop in the mall and ended up getting their own place in Georgetown. I love them SO much!
February 25th, 2010 on 8:54 am
My favorite cupcakes in my hood are the mini ones sold at Baked by Melissa on Spring Street, near Houston.
But - I do get to Dallas enough that I’d love to try your favorite spot!
February 25th, 2010 on 9:01 am
My brother and his family live in Dallas, so this would make a perfect birthday gift!
I’m not one for buying baked goods. So can I say the best bakery is my house? I love experimenting and trying new things, so I never feel like buying from someone else.
February 25th, 2010 on 9:50 am
I’ve always wanted to visit Texas. However, I do have family who drive their RV’s down there to watch the Nascar Races. So I could gift it to them!
I’m in Toronto so here’s a great shoppe. http://www.thecupcakeshoppe.ca

I live in Dallas! Love, love, love Society. By far and away the best. A&J’s bakery on Oak Lawn would be my second choice. Both are eons better than Sprinkles and the Cupcakery.
February 25th, 2010 on 10:07 am
I have lots of friends in Dallas, and even though I don’t live there myself, I;d love to win this gift certificate for one of them (who has a birthday coming up… free gift from me!)
My favorite cupcake places from all of the places I have lived are:
Los Angeles (where I went to school): Sprinkles Cupcakes
San Diego (where I’m originally from): Cupcakes Squared
Nashville (where I live now): Gigi’s Cupcakes
These are all fun places to visit, so if you ever make the trip, make sure to go to these shops!
February 25th, 2010 on 10:20 am
Dont enter me in the contest because I live in Denver but if you are even in Boulder, Colorado visit Tea & Cakes. Their chocolate bacon cupcake was featured on the Foot Network!
February 25th, 2010 on 10:30 am
Heck yes Society Bakery! I lived on Greenville Ave, right down the street from them. They are by far the best cupcakes in the area. But if I just had to choose another winner, Sprinkles is fantastic in Highland Park!
February 25th, 2010 on 10:31 am
I’m in Fort Worth now (and could easily hop over to Society Bakery on my way to Northpark & Anthropologie), but I’m originally from Austin, and I love Sugar Mama’s (http://www.sugarmamasbakeshop.com/). Some people will tell you Hey Cupcake, but Sugar Mama’s is better. And local to Austin. My mouth is watering now…
February 25th, 2010 on 10:50 am
I don’t have any good local cupcake spots, so I’m excited to hear about Society.
Best cupcakes I ever had were at our wedding in Birmingham. If you’re ever there, go to Dreamcakes for the sea salt, caramel, mocha cupcakes. Delicious!
February 25th, 2010 on 11:06 am
I have a cousin in Dallas and I’m sure she would love this.
I’m actually (gasp!) not a cupcake fan. My favorite cupcake bakery is my own kitchen, because I think store bought cupcakes are overpriced. I love cupcakes made with cake mix and applesauce instead of oil, topped with store bought icing, and refrigerated so the icing is chilled and hard.
February 25th, 2010 on 11:28 am
A cute little place called Cuppies and Joe up here in OKC-it’s in a refurbished home in the city.
BUT…my fiance and I are moving to Dallas in May…just down the road from Society Bakery! We actually went there for the 3rd time while we were looking for places to live. And of course I had the red velvet cupcake-my favorite! Definitely the best cupcake in town…blows Sprinkles out of the water
February 25th, 2010 on 11:41 am
Probably Sprinkles, but I haven’t tried many others, so that might not be very accurate! I have the Magnolia Bakery cookbook, so I think the ones I make at home are the best!
February 25th, 2010 on 11:53 am
yay cupcakes, my fave!! I’ve been DYING to go to society bakery… I’ve heard it’s the best. I really love Tart Bakery, mostly because it’s two minutes from where I live and they make an amazing strawberry cupcake with lemon curd.
February 25th, 2010 on 12:26 pm
The cupcake crazy hasn’t really caught on here in New Braunfels, but we do have Naegelin’s Bakery which is the oldest operational bakery in Texas. They have good cupcakes but really excel at German pastries.
February 25th, 2010 on 12:26 pm
Don’t enter me, but did you try Georgetown Bakery when you came to DC??? They are reportedly the best in the area and the 2 c.cakes I’ve tried were winners.
I’d never heard of yelp before, but just as I was wondering what it was Chris emailed me a link to a site he apparently found on yelp that he thinks we should check out.
February 25th, 2010 on 12:41 pm
Don’t enter me, but if you’re ever in Madison, Wisconsin, check out Daisy Cafe and Cupcakery. The cupcakes are AMAZING.
February 25th, 2010 on 12:48 pm
I really don’t have a clue where the best retail cupcakes are. I know Cousin Mary (and Elise, of course) make some pretty darn good ones. Elise (like me) isn’t a fan of frosting, so we rock some naked cupcakes together. Dinosaur sprinkles optional. That being said, I’m a fiend for cream cheese frosting a la red velvet cupcakes, so I want that pictured one to get in my tummy noooow.
February 25th, 2010 on 12:49 pm
Ohh, pick me!! My go to cupcake place has always been Red Oven Bakery in Arlington. Over the years though, i feel like the quality has gone down a little. So, I am in desperate need for a new favorite cupcake shop!! And Red Velvet is my alltime fav!
February 25th, 2010 on 1:07 pm
So very sad but where I am, the best and only cupcakes are a the grocery store.
I would love to be able to visit a Sprinkle’s or any neat place for cupcakes but I will have to move to a bigger town for that.
February 25th, 2010 on 1:17 pm
We have friends that live in Dallas that we would love to visit Society Bakery when we visit. Sadly, we have not found a good cupcake bakery around here due to just moving here. But I DO have to say Cuppies and Joe in OKC is FANTASTIC!
February 25th, 2010 on 1:28 pm
When I go out, I’m not one to buy cupcakes for dessert, but I have had some at the cakery in southlake that were really good! I work in las colinas, so I’m sure I could figure out a way to go out for some cupcakes one day if i were to win
February 25th, 2010 on 1:36 pm
I’m a Society Bakery fiend! Their cupcakes are absolutely ridiculous! Sprinkles is only about a mile from our house though, so we often stop there for treats as well - some of their cupcakes I don’t care for but anything with their cream cheese icing is pretty darn good!
February 25th, 2010 on 1:45 pm
mmm, cupcakes! I know a few people in TX I could gift them to.
February 25th, 2010 on 2:07 pm
oh my goodness - every year on my birthday my friends buy me Red Velvet cupcakes from Society Bakery. they are simply THE best. hands down. but if there was a tie or maybe a second place for tastiest cupcakes in Dallas, it would have to be the Cupcakery which has locations both in Frisco (on Lebanon) and in Uptown Dallas. they have super fun flavors that you won’t find anywhere else.
February 25th, 2010 on 2:18 pm
My mouth is watering right now!
Some of the best cupcakes around here are from Sweet Passions, Kara’s Cupcakes, and Sprinkles cupcakes.
February 25th, 2010 on 2:19 pm
DON’T include me in this giveaway. I can’t imagine I’m going to Dallas in the near or even distant future! Asia, yes; Dallas, no! LOL. But I had to comment and let you know that I think all these giveaways you’re doing this week are super-duper sweet. I’m not a regular commenter. I’m a serious lurker. I *love* your blog!
February 25th, 2010 on 2:50 pm
Hmmm… I thought long and hard about this one and decided that the honest answer would probably be some neighbor’s kitchen, but since I haven’t had any of their cupcakes I will have to say my kitchen. Living in a not quite rural not quite suburban area means no bakeries with delicious cupcakes (that I know of).
February 25th, 2010 on 3:42 pm
Ooh, fun! (And I’m visiting Dallas for the first time this summer!)
I’ve actually-is this heresy?-never once bought a cupcake. Anywhere. I’ve eaten probably hundreds, but they’ve always been homemade.
So I’ll say-the best place in my area is my kitchen.
And if you’re in town, you’re welcome to come try one!
February 25th, 2010 on 3:55 pm
We experienced this together, but definitely Love Cafe in DC… the only ones I love more would be Crumbs Bakery in NYC. I’m down in Richmond, VA now and there are a couple cupcake shops, but nothing as good as Love Cafe or Crumbs.
February 25th, 2010 on 4:16 pm
Count me in! I could plan a trip up to Dallas around a visit to this cupcake shop. =) My current favorite cupcake place here in Austin is Sugar Mama’s Bakeshop.
February 25th, 2010 on 5:19 pm
Baby Cakes in my neighborhood. Holy crap, I could eat a million. (
February 25th, 2010 on 6:33 pm
Hello Cupcake in DC makes an AMAZING chocolate chai cupcake…and if I win this I will find a way to get to Dallas (or maybe gifting it to my Texan friends would be more practical…).
February 25th, 2010 on 7:05 pm
Oooooohhh!!! I heard that Society Bakery has the best cupcake in Dallas! I’ve been planning to go try their banana chocolate chip cupcake that people have been raving about. The gift certificate would be perfect!
I haven’t eaten lots of cupcake in the past. The best cupcake i’ve tasted is probably the red velvet from Sprinkles.
February 25th, 2010 on 7:16 pm
Honestly, I haven’t had a good cupcake here in Richmond, VA yet. However, the Ipanema Cafe here has an amazing bakery with cakes, brownies, and vegan pies that I would recommend to anyone and everyone.
