Comment Email Issues

Posted by Jenna, Under blog

Comments have recently stopped being delivered to my inbox like they used to, which means replying to them is going to be even more difficult than usual for me because I don’t have any way of “marking” those that I want to answer. I’m worried that if this continuessome of your lovely comments will be lost to me and I’ll never see them, which would be so sad because I love reading your comments as much as I love eating cheesecake. And I love cheesecake a whole lot.

Is there any chance that I have a WordPress genius reading my blog who might be able to solve this problem for me?

I’m pasting my posting on the WordPress.org support forum below to give you some context:

Withing the past few days, I’ve stopped receiving comment emails in my gmail inbox. I have “email me whenever someone post a comment” checked under Settings-> Discussion, and I have double checked to make sure that the email address under my user profile is correct. Emails are not being sent to my spam folder, as I have checked there.

I noticed at first that my approved comments weren’t being sent to my email inbox properly, but now I don’t have any new comments being sent to the email address I have listed under my user profile.

I’ve upgraded my version of WordPress to the most current version (although this was done after I started having problems) and the only changes I’ve made to my site recently include adding several contributors

Update: Good news! A kind stranger helped me figure out a workaround to the comment issues (the issue seems to be with google, the first time gmail has failed me!). Big thank you to Wade who stayed up so late solving my problem.

  9. I’m so glad you got some help. Is the gmail issue simple enough to explain? I think the same thing has happened to me with Facebook and I no longer get notifications, although my preferences are set to send them to my gmail.

gmail was somehow blocking the mail from the server WordPress is hosted on. I’m pretty sure Google somehow got it in their head that this server was ending spam, so they started blocking things.

In this specific case I could track the mail all the way until Google accepted the message, but couldn’t find it anywhere beyond that.

Ultimately we switched the address that the blog is sending to, then had gmail check that account wit ha pop connection. So, we didn’t really “fix” anything, the root issue is still there, Google is not accepting mail correctly. We did however find an acceptable workaround that shouldn’t break anytime soon.

On that note, I wanted to make sure Jenna got the e-mail from this comment. Things still working Jenna?
