T1 at 5 Months

5 Months

Nicknames: Boo, Boo Boo, Grunty, WoochieWoo (that last one is courtesy of Dad)
Temperament: We’re convinced that you are making it your life mission to convince all of the women of the world (of childbearing age) to make some friends with you, because without fail you are a dream when we are around groups of women for a long time or for the few times we’ve left you with a sitter.
Things I Could Do Without: Sometimes you wake up 3-4 times between 7pm and 7 am, you still scream about 50% of the time in your car seat, lately you’ve taken to scratching yourself in this very repetitive motion while in the bath which turns your thigh raw because you scratch it over and over, I think you’ve dropped one of your naps, you peed on my jeans the other day.
Item/Toy We Love The Most: Your new walker from Target. You can’t reach the ground but you love sitting up and sucking on the steering wheel.
Item/Toy You Love The Most: The toy I have connected to your car seat. When you grab certain parts it sounds like you’re unwrapping a candy bar and I like to call out to you “Boo, are you enjoying your candy bar back there?”
Things I’m Loving Most Right Now: I think you are slowly starting to recognize that I’m someone important to you, how sweet you are when I have you sit in my lap while I work at the computer, dad went out of town and I let you sleep in the bed with me and each morning when I opened my eyes I saw you smiling so sweetly at me, you’re happy and smiling for much longer portions of the day.
Things You’re Loving Most Right Now: You laugh when tickled (not always just sometimes), scratching your thigh raw in the bathtub, burping up your milk and then “chewing your cud”, you love gathering up hair balls from the carpet and clutching them in your palm, you recently discovered that you can make high pitched squeals, sucking on my iPhone, gnawing on my finger.

You’ve now rolled front-to-back and back-to-front, but you can’t do it on demand and you seem to do it most when we’re out of the room. I’ll put you down on the floor and come back in the room to discover you’re in a completely different spot, facing a different direction, on your back instead of your front.

This month I experienced my first real moment of “mom panic”. I set you down in the office and later heard the sound of plastic crinkling. We were still living in a mess of boxes and unpacking and you had managed to roll right over to a pile of plastic wrap. Of course you wanted to bring that right up to your mouth because that’s your new favorite thing!

Lately we’ve been working on sitting up. You only last for 3-5 seconds at most but I expect to write that you’re sitting up unsupported by next month.

There are a lot more pictures this month due to our amazing new apartment. And my new lens.

  2. I love getting to watch him grow! The very end of the video where he’s sitting made me laugh a lot! Such a cute one you’ve got, Jenna!

  3. With our babies only being 2 weeks apart, it’s SO interesting to see the differences in them! T1 is exactly where my son was at this age… but Dot is doing so much more! I’d always heard that girls do things faster, but I really had no idea. I kind of envy you right now, with T1′s still limited mobility. :) Dot’s rolling over and over and army crawling and sitting up. It’s wonderful… but it keeps me on my toes!
I love these posts… i feel like I know him!

    Kelli Nicole Reply:

She has a Canon 5D Mark II. The video on them is incredible!

Oh okay. I thought she used a separate one.

    Kelli Nicole Reply:

Aren’t they adorable?! I love them too. She got them from here - pickysticky.com (they’re stickers you just stick on a onesie for the picture).

  11. T1 is adorable. but i have to ask…are those numbers permanant on the onsies? does he wear them more then just the month he is? I can’t see myself buying all those onsies and only wear them for a month or even just for the photo shoot? I think they are adorable don’t get me wrong…just curious how you work it?!

    Ali Reply:

I am pretty sure they are stickers. You can buy them in sets for like $15. That is what I have used.

    tiffany Reply:

    that totally makes sense! Thanks!!

    Kelli Nicole Reply:

She got them from here - pickysticky.com (and yes, they’re just stickers!).

  13. Oh this made me grin BIG TIME! What a total cutie. Also, I thought at first that he was a TH clone but in these pictures, he is really looking more and more like you.

    13

  17. Number 3& 4 B&W — looks like his dad!
1st color after the B&W series — “This is my plotting-world-domination face.”

So cute! I’m doing month-by-month photoshoots with Baby T as well, and I’ve been trying to model my shots (set-up, lighting, etc) after yours. They’ve been improving drastically, so thank you for the inspiration! :)

  18. I loved the video until the end when you kept trying to force him to sit up. I don’t think he really liked that much! Why not just let him come around to that on his own?

I think baby muscles are just like grown up muscles. If we use them they grow stronger!

Such a cutie! Love the sticker on the onesie! Great for taking month pictures!
So I have to know, which lens did you get?? I’m about to completely upgrade ALL my gear, I mean 5D mark ii, 4 new lenses, and a bunch of other little things. So I’d love to know what you now have. I know at the aspirations session, you had the 50 1.2 and something else. You should totally do a gear post sometime. :) Or have you already?

    Jenna Reply:

Oh how exciting! You are going to love your 5d like your own child :)

I curretly own the 50 1.2, 35 1.4, 16-35 2.8, and 135 2.0. If I were going to sell it all and buy 4 new lenses it would benthr 50 1.2, 35 1.4, 85 1.2, and 135 2.0. I’m a prime lover though so my dream kit would probably be a bit different than what most people would get. If you want to save a bit you should look into the 50 1.4 and the 85 1.8, both are supposed to be nearly as good as their more expensive counterparts (join a forum and search through old threads or do a google search). The 5th lens I would choose would be a 24mm and the 6th would be the 45mm 2.8 tilt-shift.

Definitely rent unless you’re positive you will love something. I lost like $1000 buying the 70-200 (which I never used and then sold to my sister) because everyone said it was their favorite lens but it just didn’t work for my style.

He is so cute! Seriously. I can’t wait to see him again because I feel like he is getting so big! What great pictures :)

  21. It’s crazy how much more active he is now, and it shows just on the pictures.
I love the little mole by his nose.
Looking at the video and the first images, it makes me wonder how much longer until he starts to crawl around and just have a blast crawling all over the place, his face looks like he’s ready for it even if his muscles aren’t quite yet.

    21
  22. Puh-lease tell me how to get my babies eyes in focus! I’m struggling so hard with this for some reason! I’m shooting with a 50mm 1.8. Help!

    Kelli Nicole Reply:

The 50 back-focuses like crazy (focus on the eyes, the ears are in focus), is that what’s happening? When you get within a certain distance (for example, within 4 feet of the subject, not sure on the exact # though)it seems to have a lot of problems. I always manually focused with my 50 when I got close. Otherwise, maybe try focusing on the eyebrows instead of the eyes. Also, make sure the shutter speed is fast, at least 1/200th sec.

  23. Jenna, I love following your blog and reading about your family. What I thought I’d love about your monthly updates on T1 would be how he’d grow in comparison to that stuffed giraffe, but this month cracks me up because he’s clearly so active with the giraffe! The other months he seemed to kinda stay put…he looks as if he’s developing quite the personality now (like, “mommy, I really think the best pose for this shot is definitely if I grab this giraffe’s head and pin it down”). So cute!

    23
  24. I really love these posts!! It will be so neat for him to be able to read monthly updates about his life! He’s a lucky boy for sure! :)

    24
  25. You have one of THE cutest babies I’ve seen.He makes my ovaries hurt and want to go procreate! Amazing pics!

    25
  26. Jen he is so precious! That video is fabulous! I absolutely loved every second of it! Makes me miss the twinkies at that age!
