Book Club Vote (January)

Posted by Jenna, Under book club

Have you been reading Cheap? I know Sarah, Cristin, Andrea, and Claire have (maybe others, I’m going by the comment section of the post) and I’m pretty sure they would agree with me that this is a book that makes you want to make some changes, which is why I like non-fiction so much. I’ll be putting up a reminder post about the discussion in the comments section in about a week or so — basically when I finish the book myself. :)

It’s time to choose the first book of 2011, because I know a lot of you are using the library like I am and I want to make sure you have plenty of time to reserve the December book. Do you have Nurtureshock yet? I guarantee you it’s worth the read. That Husband and I are obsessed with this book and we plan on basing a lot of our parenting strategies on the information that they present. I’m going to make the Nurtureshock reading period from November 15th through December 31st so we can be on a monthly schedule in 2011, which should make it a lot easier for everyone to keep track of when we are finishing one book and moving on to another.

I’m going to present 5 options to vote on, the top 3 performers from the last vote, and 2 more of my choice. Click on the image to visit the Goodreads page for each book and get an idea regarding what it is about.

  1. hey That Wife, I am an avid follower on your blog, and like others (I hope) I do not know you. I am however a Dallas girl misplaced in Chicago, so that’s ironic! We leave in Wrigleyville. Anyways, I just wanted to say that I have read the Hundred Year Diet and Chutes and Ladders and I feel that both on them should make the reading list. I hope we will get to read all the books! Thanks! Can’t wait to see what you post next!

  2. this has nothing to do with book club, but i was wondering if you read clothed much blog? i remember when you were doing posts on stylish conservative outfits, so i thought of you when i saw she’s a mormon fashion blogger and has links to others: http://www.clothedmuch.com/p/mormon-fashion-bloggers.html

  3. I’m excited when we get to Nutureshock! I already voted for Fear, but saw that the Hundred Year Diet is also popular and that was my second choice. Sounds interesting!

  4. Argh, I’m voting for the underdog… I really really want to do Half the Sky. I’ve been wanting to read it for months, because it’s one of my favorite topics.

As to the current book club, I wish I could say that I had even STARTED Cheap yet. I’m still catching up with all the real food movement books (Real Food for Mother and Baby, The Maker’s Diet, Nutrition and Physical Degeneration by Weston A. Price) and I also write high school study guides so I’ve got a bunch of classic American literature to read as well.

If you’d ever like to add another book to a future poll, another book I’d love to read (and have out from the library, just sitting around hopefully) is And If I Perish (http://www.amazon.com/If-Perish-Frontline-Nurses-World/dp/140003129X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1289482626&sr=1-1).

  5. I’m not going to vote because I know I probably won’t have time to read the books with the book club, but I just wanted to commend you on your book choices! They all sound so interesting! I think I’m going to be asking for “Cheap” and “Chutes and Ladders” for Chanukah!

  6. If Devil in the White City is not the book chosen I definitely recommend it for you to read anyways. It’s an excellent balance of historical fact and detail intermixed with the story behind America’s first serial killer. I have not read the whole book, but thus far it is not too graphic.

Good read! I have loved all of the books you’ve been putting up for choices… they are going on my personal book list and I hope to participate in one of the book club discussions in the future.

  7. I had to return Cheap to the library before I could finish it, unfortunately. I’ll try to pick it up another time, though. I’m looking forward to Nurtureshock.

  8. I never thought I’d be participating in your book club only because non-fiction reading isn’t really my thing. But last week I heard they were going to make Devil in the White City into a movie and I read up on the book and it sounded really interesting! Great timing!

It would be really fun to read it before the movie comes out!

  9. I already read it but I’m voting for Half the Sky. It’s amazing book. Who knew that giving a girl a uniform could make the difference between whether she continues in school or not. I’d read this book again anytime.

  10. I voted for Devil in the White City but if I were to cheat and vote twice, I’d also pick Fear. They all look great though!

  11. I voted for Half the Sky. My second choice would be the 100 year diet because I feel it would give me some good insight on the American way to see food, so different from mine.
I picked up NutureShock at the library this morning. I’m really excited to read it. And now that I have more time I think I’m going to borrow Cheap and also the Dirt on Clean. They both sound very interesting. I guess I can always do very belated comments in the book club section :)

I might be a belated commenter too. Just seems like I don’t have as much time as I’d like to read, plus I’m part of another book club. I’m still working on The Dirt on Clean, and I just picked up Cheap from the library. Maybe I’ll get to do a ton of reading over Thanksgiving break? I hope so!

  12. I voted for The Hundred Year Diet! I haven’t started Cheap yet, but it’s in my to be read pile. It will probably the next thing I read. I had a few books that I had to get through first because they were due back to the library!

A note on Fear - I don’t have any personal experience with it, but I know my husband started reading it and actually didn’t get through the whole thing because he disliked it. He said that it was very outdated because our perspectives and the things we fear (valid or not) have drastically shifted post-9/11 so the things in the book weren’t really valid in a lot of cases.

This might mean the book doesn’t make much sense if/when we read it, or it might make for very interesting discussion!
