Fashionably Modest: Black, White, and Red Shooting Style

Posted by Jenna, Under clothing

I think this outfit is kind of boring, but I wanted to show it because it’s an example of something I put together when I was headed out to take some pictures for someone. It wasn’t an official shoot, more like a little mentoring session that I was doing for a friend, but I was taking pictures so I used one of my newer tips from Kelli Nicole, to wear white (especially on top) so that you have a built in reflector when you’re standing in front of your clients. It will help brighten up their faces!

I want to be more stylish when I shoot (I get really jealous of the outfits I see people like Jasmine Star or Sarah Rhoads putting together when they are shooting as I think they look unbelievably fabulous). I think I’ll have more confidence in this area when I’m thinner, as I need to wear very long layers to keep my fat from poking out when I’m squirming all over the place to get the best angle for the shot. Once Jenna Cole is profitable I’d like to put together some Pinterest outfit boards and invest in an outfit specifically for shooting portrait sessions and one specifically for weddings. This is the mostly thrift store ensemble I have for now though. I love wearing maternity pants when I shoot, because the full panel gives me the ability to bend over without worrying that I’m exposing things that my clients don’t want to see!

White sweater – $6.50
Black sweater-$5
Black undershirt, DownEast Basics -$10
Black maternity pants-$25
Red heels, Zara-$40
Jewelry-Gifts from my mom, teal bracelet was free with another purchase

Total Cost of The Items I Purchased: $86.50

Total Cost of Thrifted Items: $11.50

If you’re a photographer I’d love to know what stylish outfits you wear when you’re shooting!

As a fellow top heavy chica I would recommend buttoning the middle to buttons under your bust rather than the top couple. It makes you look top heavier then you are and I think would round out an awesome outfit. I dont know if you buttoned the top two for modesty sake so feel free to ignore this suggestion if you did!

This sweater actually only has a top few buttons. I don’t really love it and I agree it’s not the most flattering thing I own, I think things that emphasize my waist look a lot better!

    Andrea Reply:

This could easily be remedied by leaving the buttons undone and belting the sweater at the waist. Cute outfit and nicely styled!

I think it’s cute! I love the look of red flats with basic outfits like that, but I don’t own any because I’m usually wearing too much color and it’d clash. But I think they’re very stylish!

  4. You look great! I especially love the heels - they are such a great color.

  5. Is that bracelet from Seven Slings? I think I have the same one, but kind of wondered why I needed a bracelet to match my baby’s sling.
I think you look completely stylish and professional. Love your hair in that big messy bun too!

  6. You look so beautiful! Love the shoes with the black/white outfit. The jewelry adds that touch of shine! Hair up is a must with this outfit.

    So fierce!

I love your bun. I don’t think I quite have enough hair to make one though. Tutorial post in the future? Yes, I need a tutorial for making a fierce bun, I’m that inept with hair. My long hair is worn down all the time because the only up do’s I can do are variations on a pony-tail!

  9. I have a lot of black clothes. I have to wear dark, solid clothing for my job - but I always dress it up with awesome shoes! I love yours! :)

  17. You look great Jenna! Love how the red shoes pop. I wish I had some fabulous red shoes. Still haven’t found the right pair.

  18. I think that’s a pretty cute outfit - I especially love the red shoes!

Honestly, I’ve never thought about what one should wear for photo shoots. I’m having my first paid photo shoot on Sunday and now I don’t know what I should wear! Oh dear.

  19. So jealous when women can find amazing shoes. I have size 11w and it’s sooo hard to find good quality shoes that are cute and don’t cost me an arm and a leg. Most the time my shoes end up hurting my feet or don’t last a long time. Anyone know where a size 11w can be found in styles other than orthopedic shoes for the elderly, lol?

    Maranda Reply:

I wear a 12W or 13M and I found some decent ones at payless, nordstrom rack and zappos.com

    J Reply:

I wear a 9 so I can’t relate but I do know the (mega shoe)Marshalls stores tend to have a lot of sizes 10,11,12 in the clearance section. I’ve specifically seen several cute pairs at affordable prices (i.e. $70 Tall Uggs) and wished I knew someone who could take advantage of them. Also, thie one of a kind find rack sometimes contains large sizes.

  20. I like this outfit, it looks comfortable. I think photographers always look great in sleek black outfits — it helps them blend in while still looking fierce… but the white top makes sense. I wondered if this white top achieves the reflector effect since you are still showing a lot of black? I know nothing about photgraphy, can you tell?

    Jenna Reply:

Haha, I only really care about reflecting light on their faces, and so I only really need my top to be white for it to make a difference. I generally thin my photos look a bit red, and so I’m also considering a greenish top to see what what that does.

  21. I really like this outfit! The shoes are a great pop of color and are really fun. I also love your hair up like that! I agree with the others who sai dyou should do a tutorial for it, though you probably have more hair than me :) You look great! Interesting fact about the white too.

    21
  22. If this outfit is blah, then I am blah everyday! I have comes to term with the fact that i am a “simple” dresser. I am working on accessorizing more…you look wonderful and put together!

    22
  23. I love the red shoes!

  24. I’m kind of so-so about the outfit just from a fashion perspective. If wearing white on top helps the light reflection then the outfit would be a good thing (maybe a shirt with little mirrors/sequins:)) With your coloring though I don’t think the white is as flattering as the jewel-toned tops you’ve worn. The clear jewel colors are much more flattering to your complexion and beautiful hair. Also, white with the bun seems kind of severe. I agree with the idea of belts to define the waist are really flattering. Excellent idea about maternity pants giving you good coverage when you have to be bending and stretching and moving all around.

  25. I like that outfit!

You would have laughed at me at my shoot on Thursday. I wore a skirt, because I really don’t have any nice pants beyond dark wash jeans, and the whole time I was scrambling around for angles I was just glad that there was no one behind me. Next time I’ll know better. :)

    25
  26. You look really cute!! I actually like the way the sweater looks with the top buttons buttoned.

    26
  27. I LOVE the hair!

  28. I love your hair in these pictures!

  29. Jenna! I think you look fab! I came across these a little while ago and just now remembered them. I thought you might be interested, if you havent already heard of them. They’re called Hip-T’s. I thought they might help out with your photoshoots to keep everything modest and covered while still allowing you move around, with out having to wear maternity pants with the panel. Kind of like a belly band only cuter! You could make your own to coordinate with the clothes you already have.
