We spent the morning of Memorial Day at the park with a big group from church. It was a very laid back everyone-bring-your-own-food affair and I LOVED it. I was able to control the food we ate (if it was church sponsored I guarantee you it would have been chips and hot dogs and other things that would have left me bloated and filled with regret), everyone trickled in between 10:00am and noon, and T1 was able to wander around from blanket to blanket mooching off anyone who would hand him something to munch on.
We were one of the first families there, and That Husband passed the time playing chess on his phone. He’s addicted! T1 did his best to scamper away from us.
We dined on bean spread sandwiches with yogurt dill spread, popcorn, carrots, zucchini cake-bread, and kale chips.
He liked the popcorn the best.
One of the other babies showed up wearing the exact same outfit as T1. They looked adorable together.
I modeled and fell in love with a friend’s floppy hat. I wore my great-great-grandma’s brooch and my great-grandma’s earrings as a little nod to Memorial Day.
We got a few hours out of him, but around 1:00pm it was time to go home.
TH and some of his business school buddies.
We couldn’t possible leave without a family picture. I’m already looking forward to the ward picnic next year!
The other thing we did on Memorial Day? Buzzed T1′s head again! It’s always a little weird when it’s so much shorter, but it’s more even (we’re always looking to make it more even) and it’s better for the hot summer days. Pictures coming soon!

This point is oddly confusing I guess! There are like 500 (I can’t remember the exact number) students in each year of Booth’s business school, so there are a handful of Mormons each year! Our year is actually small with only two LDS guys. Usually I think there are like 4 or 5 families who move into the ward to attend business school each year.
He certainly has other friends, but this is the group that goes to church (and not everyone pictured here is a biz school guy, there are a few PHD students and law students in there as well)

This one was:
bread
lettuce
chive spread https://thatwifeblog.com/2011/05/avocado-cornmeal-black-bean-burger-with-chive-yogurt-sauce/
and a white bean spread I made up the morning of with navy beans (I did mine from scratch as I think they taste much better), olive oil, green onions, and asiago cheese all blended up together in the food processor.
It’s our new favorite sandwich, at least until we have the ingredients to start making Miety again! https://thatwifeblog.com/diet/2010/11/04/miety/

Looks like fun! I love the popcorn idea. So, I’m probably the only one who doesn’t know this, but do get the corn that’s fully developed (you know all yellow and delicious and everything) and put that in the bag?
Also, you seriously are looking so good girl!

I actually popped that popcorn right off the cob, it’s this really cool thing I got at the farmer’s market. But you can do the exact same thing with the kernels you buy at the grocery store! Just put them in a brown paper bag and microwave for about 3 minutes. You know it’s done when you can count to 3 in between pops. No oil required!

JENNA-you look fantastic!
Also, please tell me more about how you did that popcorn. My husband and I snack on popcorn like there’s no tomorrow, and I’d love to try this.

I’m thinking the same thing as above - whoa, all of the business school buddies go to your church. Totally jeal. That wasn’t the case with husband’s or my schooling. Though there aren’t any women in that picture… I say that as the lone girl in my ward who is in graduate school. It can be awkward sometimes.
I loved Chicago’s parks… so beautiful and well planned!

That’s what I just bought after extensive/confusing/overwhelming sunscreen research, but we haven’t used it yet. Did it rub on/in okay? Did you reapply at any point? And, I’m going to echo the “YOU LOOK FANTASTIC” comments!

Ummm, I’m embarrassed to admit I haven’t used it yet. We forgot it for the picnic. I’ve read it’s really greasy though, and I’m prepared for that.

I use Badger 30+ everyday on my daughter! Yes it is a bit greasy, really massage the tube before you squeeze it out and then rub it on your fingers to make it a little less greasy and thick. It goes on really white but you can rub it in and it’s not too bad. My main complaint is that it gets on everything, the front of my carrier has a white line across the top from it! As for reapplying it I do so every couple of hours. When I was looking at sunscreens there was one by Aubrey Organics that I actually liked more but it was more money for a smaller size. It was less greasy and not super white.

I love that quilt. I love all quilts, but that one is perfect for Memorial Day! Is there a story behind it?

Yes there is! I’m so proud of that quilt. My great-grandma made it for us for our wedding. A priceless gift that I plan to use on many, many picnics throughout the years.

How do you wash it? I get so anxious about cleaning my special quilts that they get very little practical use.

I will probably just throw it in the washer when it gets really dirty. I’m of the opinion that the majority of things in life are best appreciated when used (of course it’s important to be respectful of them!). But I think my grandma went through all of that work to have me enjoy it, not to hang it on a wall somewhere. At least I hope that’s what she would want!
