Iphone Running Trainer
I’m looking for an app on for my iPhone that will act as a personal trainer when running. Commenters like tamapagirl have encouraged me to try interval training, and I think it would not only help me work harder, I think I would eventually run faster as well.
(If you didn’t know, I ran a 5k on Saturday and finished at around 34:30, I’d like to shoot for an under 30:00 5k goal.)
I’ve been using the RunKeeper app on my phone to track my runs via GPS (I highly recommend it for this purpose, it does a great jog), but it doesn’t have the kind of training feature I’d like. Anyone have any suggestions? I’m tempted to switch to a Droid so I can use CardioTrainer (via Sophia) which has everything I’m looking for in a running app.
I looked at the Cardiotrainer link and I have RunKeeper Pro 2.4.6.0 and it does all of the bullets except Pedometer, Move your bot, and Autopause.
With RunKeeper Pro, you can also buy training programs via the website and add custom intervals in the coaching tab.
What are you wanting to be able to do that you cannot?

Sophia said with Cardiotrainer that you can race against yourself (AWESOME!) which I don’t think RunKeeper can do. Maybe I’m not going to the right part of the website to understand where these training programs are? I see like 5 on the website but I don’t get excited about any of them.

That is awesome. I would quite enjoy that! There is a whole thread about this on the RK site: http://support.runkeeper.com/discussions/suggestions/206-ghost-run
The ‘fitness classes’ as they call them are here:
http://runkeeper.com/search/fitness-classes/running
and you are correct they are boring.
There is more as the race distances get longer, but the 3 for 5k’s, do not look interesting at all.
Sorry I couldn’t be a bigger help.

Thanks for the tip on the cardio training app, Jenna. Looks perfect!

2I use Nike+ GPS and love it. A lot. And DailyBurn is a good one, too.

Does the DailyBurn app track how you are running via GPS and come on with prompts that tell you what to do next? And can you listen to your own music while using it?

Nope, it’s really more of a tracker, I guess.

I’ll second Nike+GPS. You can sign up for a free training program and it sets up your workouts for the number of weeks in the program (probably 12). You can pick one to increase your speed for 5k since that is what you’re trying to do. You have to set up the training part on the website (nikeplus.com) but then it should show up on your app.

I’m very intrigued, but I don’t get exactly what I would need to buy. Do they have something I can just slip in my shoe?

Or do I just need the app?

You can sign up at the website (free) and link your app ($2.99?) to your account. Or, you can just run the suggested training plan that’s listed for free on the website and use an app you’ve already purchased to track your runs (runkeeper).
Nike+ used to have a foot pod and something to put in your ipod, but there’s the new(ish) iphone app that allows you to skip the foot pod/ipod thing altogether.

This probably totally doesn’t help you as you’re looking for a phone specific thing, but I have a Garmin Forerunner GPS watch that I used for running and I LOVE it.
I have the 205, that I got for 88$ during a black friday sale and it’s great, though the 205 doesn’t have the HRM like the 305, so the calorie count is probably not as accurate. They’re usually on sale around the holidays and stuff, and walmart.com and amazon are decently priced… I went this route because I like to run with my ipod shuffle and without my phone, so people can’t bother me

5Love the Nike+ app for the iphone. You don’t need to buy the shoe thing (that’s just for the nano, at least it was back in the day when I had it). It’s the best I’ve used - even better than the $450 garmin watch, which really needs to make its way to ebay one of these days.

6Well - you liked the C25K program, why not ramp up to the Bridge to 10K?
