The Meat Lovers Meatless Cookbook

Posted by Jenna, Under Cooking

As I am attempting to write like 20 posts in an hour, most of these are going to be me cleaning out my “Future That Wife Posts” folder in my gmail account. Sort of like a Brain Dump, but with only one link per day.

I’m almost done with the Omnivore’s Dilemma, and now I understand why my friend Janssen said she likes it better than In Defense of Food. The chapter where he talks about the philosophies behind eating meat and choosing to go vegetarian are really stellar, and I rate this book as a must read for… pretty much everyone (we all have to eat after all!) The Meat Lover’s Meatless Cookbook seems like it would be a great kitchen staple for those who agree with the idea that we should eat less meat, but don’t want to be stuck eating dinky salads all day long.

I haven’t tried this cookbook yet, but I thought it was worth mentioning here because of this excellent write-up from Civil Eats. If you’ve used it, I’d love to know if it’s something I should think about buying!

*This post wasn’t sponosored, FYI. Though if the author would like to send me a copy or let me give one away, I’d love to do so. :)

  1. I have this cookbook (got it as an XMas gift from my Secret Santa) and I LOVE it. The recipes are amazing, and she’s got a great way of taking recipes and creating variations and stacking meals on top of each other. Some of them are a bit time consuming, but they’re also really good. She also suggests some really fantastic flavor combinations for things like pizza and sandwiches that I’m anxious to try. Everything is a bit involved and uses a lot of ingredients, but every recipe we’ve tried has been well written and delicious. She is clearly somebody who knows how to cook, which I’ve found (as I’ve been trying recipes from various cookbooks) isn’t actually that common in cookbook authors.

  3. I haven’t used this cookbook, but I know that the author, Kim O’Donnel, used to write a column and do a chat for the Washington Post that I always enjoyed reading, and I think that she’d been an advocate of Meatless Mondays long before it became so “popular.” Based on my knowledge of her and her writing alone, I’d be interested to try this book, especially since my husband seems to feel that no dinner is complete without meat.

  4. This will help with my new diet I am having to go on, I can’t eat a whole lot of meat and I kind of need to cut it completely out except for fish. I am going to check it out at the bookstore this weekend.

  6. Thanks for pointing this out, always on the lookout for ways to convert DH to no-meat dishes. He pretty much turns his nose up at anything with beans in it, which is usually my idea of meatless. I’ll have to check it out.

  7. This is great - I will check it out. I am looking for meatless recipes, and when I saw your ‘dinky salad’ comment I thought “FINALLY!!” I mean, I can go for a good salad every now and then, but not every single day. Thanks for the tip!
