I’ve never taken a selfie, and I confess, I don’t understand the meaning behind selfies… I seem to be missing something vital to my generation!
As a photographer, can you explain to a non-photographer the significance of the selfie? How does it compare to the photo with friends, the photo of scenery etc? How do you capture a sense of interaction and rapport when you are looking into a camera in your own hand, rather than into the eyes of a friend who wants your picture? It’s a bit sad that even T2 knows how it is done and I have no idea!!

Well, I’m not a photographer but I do “selfie”. Its a valid means of expression, although one available to anyone with a camera - self portraits have been a thing for as long as humans have thought to interpret themselves with a medium of some sort. For me, a selfie is look here I am, I exist! Or look, here I am, I feel confident. Or look, here I am, in a situation that makes me feel ____! My son and I selfie when there is no one around to get a quick snapshot of us at museums or making silly faces on the couch. For me, the interaction and rapport is with the observer, if I plan to post it on social media (for me, Facebook and Instagram), or there the interaction and rapport is with myself.
