Henrietta Lacks Discussion
I finally took the time to sit down and write out my thoughts about Henrietta Lacks. You can join the discussion here if you’ve read the book!
I still haven’t started on Our Babies, Ourselves and it’s going to take me some time to get through it. I understand not a lot of people are interested in parenting books, but the response to that choice was really low. Are you guys over the book club? If you are I’m going to change the format up a bit and go ahead and read what I’d like each month, but post a discussion post that let’s people talk about it if they so please. Pretty similar to what is happening now, but no one else will have any say in what I’m reading.
I think a book that the book club should consider is Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mom by Amy Chua if read in entirety. Everybody is taking it as a “How to raise your child” book when really she’s writing about her experience and how she kind of acknowledges some of her mistakes.
I think her struggle really represents how all of us try to be better mom’s and how we feel can feel like failures ourselves.
Just a thought.
1Happy to have you pick books and join in when feasible!!
2I already started on the babies book :).
3I like the idea of your book club but just haven’t had much time for reading lately.
4I started Our Babies Ourselves, because I was determined to finally join your book club, but honestly, it’s really kind of hard to get into and I found it extremely boring (unlike Nurtureshock, which I finally started). I wound up returning it to the library because it was due and I just couldn’t get into it.
I’d love to start/continue doing book club, but I do honestly have a hard time with nonfiction (although I’m loving Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, which I’m reading right now). I think it’s fine if you do it more as a “read along with me” style though.
5I read Our Babies Ourselves in 2 days while on bedrest awaiting my little one. I bought it because it was your book club book (I’d never heard of it before) but I’m not really good about actually being a part of a book club. I rarely have much to say and forget to check back to see what others have said. I do want to talk about this book though because I enjoyed it so much and having been a parent for one whole month now I have some opinions. Looking forward to your post on it.

I need to update this link! I’ll work on that. I also need to finish the book!
