Results for the How I Take A Picture Vlog

Posted by Jenna, Under Photography

Here are my pictures from the vlog yesterday. I took 21 pictures total and edited it down to my favorites.

All of the images in this post are straight-out-of-camera unless I note otherwise.

This is the very bright picture. I actually like it more than I thought, and this happened because I made a pretty classic mistake. I was a bit flustered and so I didn’t check my histogram like I should have! I still think this photo is a little bright on my (calibrated) monitor, but it’s not as bad as I thought and I would have realized that had I looked at my histogram.

I took a few with this setting but it was a little dark.

f2.2

So I lightened things up a bit by slowing down my shutter speed a little.

These are the settings I kept the rest of the time.

I love this one the most based on his expression, but I think my arm was casting a shadow on his face because it’s a bit dark.

I could have tried to lighten it up using editing, but see how is looks kind of “lifted” when I do that? The key to great pictures really is getting it right in camera!

This one ended up being my favorite. Look at those eyelashes!

I like it best in black and white, I think it really draws attention to his eyes.

Also, this is the first glimpse you’re getting of his new haircut. We buzzed it again the other night and I’m loving it.

  2. T1 is so cute! Love his new haircut. Can you please tell me where you got that bib? I need “full-coverage” bibs like that instead of the scrawnier ones we currently use. Thanks!

My grandma made it for him. I agree, the bibs you find int he store are way too small to be useful to anyone!

  4. I like the bright one! And you are right about the B&W one, it does make the eyes pop.

  5. Love them, especially the eyelashes one. Your B&W shots are always so dreamy. Do you use a Lightroom preset to go from color to BW (if you don’t mind me asking)?

    Jenna Reply:

I have a preset in LR that was created by tweaking until I found something that seemed to work with most of my images (based on a Totally Rad preset I believe). This one was put into Photoshop as well though, where I layer two Totally Rad actions on top of each other.

For me processing is all about trying new things until I find something that works and then sticking with it!

  6. I need to use these tips… I have a hard time figuring out when I am in the right light.

  7. My question has nothing to do with photography… How in the world do you keep him from not flinging that plate across the room?? Mine would never let a plate sit on his chair for longer than maybe 3 seconds. LOL. :)

Haha, only a fellow mom would ask this question! I was just lucky this time, I’ve had many plates like that dumped promptly on the floor.
