Style Files: Black Dress, Gray Tights

Posted by Jenna, Under clothing

Wearing this dress is so fun because I always get compliments on it. I love that feeling! Thanks mom for getting it for me, and thanks kind friends who say nice things to me (something I’m always trying to work on). I think maybe this combination would have worked better with higher heels? It’s hard for me to find higher heels that I can wear due to my fat feet and high arches. Being on carpet and having my feet sink down into the floor doesn’t help things either. Or maybe black dress with gray tights is never okay?

Dress: Nordstrom rack
Tights: Poland
Belt: Poland
Shoes: Poland
Necklace: Poland

As you probably guessed, I like to do a lot of shopping when we visit Poland.

  1. That dress is so pretty! I adore a good simple, black dress! :)

  2. Why do you buy a lot of clothes in Poland? Is it cheaper/better quality/just like the novelty? I’m not asking in a judgey way at all, just curious. :)

I think it’s vacation mentality? We’re on vacation and it feels easier to spend money! :)

Ah that makes sense! And it has the benefit of (usually) being totally different stores than you get at home. People do that even domestically, ending up shopping at the Gap or whatever in some different state even though it’s no different.

I’m totally guilty of that as well-even between different countries. I think I was in H&M in at least three different countries within a month or two once (Germany, Czech Republic and the US). Same stuff in each one!

  3. I think gray tights with a black dress or skirt is fine. But since I’m short, so I try to match my shoes to my tights because I think it makes my legs look longer (whether I’m wearing heels or not).

This is why I post these outfits. This hadn’t occurred to me but it makes so much sense! Thanks Katie.

That is a great tip. I have to wear tights with my Easter dress tomorrow because it’s chilly again here. I kept wondering which shoes to wear with my dress and it makes so much sense to match your shoes to your tights. Thanks!

  4. Hello! What a nice surprise. I was just checking out your blog because my publisher is running an ad on my new book here (The Bear Went Over the Mountain). It was so nice to see your Polish outfit. I was born in Warsaw and came over at age 7. Such a changed country now- with lots of great things to buy- as you well know! Nice to meet you :-)

Nice to (virtually) meet you as well! It looks like a great book (I check all of the products out before I let the ads run on my site and only allow those that feel relevant for my readers).

My husband’s family is from the Ruda Slaska area. We’re headed out to see them in August of this year and I’m so excited!

Thanks for the nice words! The book is doing well for its first week of publication. I’m happy. I hope you’ll have a wonderful trip to Poland!

  5. The dress would look better with heels (I understand the dilemma of not finding heels due to wide feet!). If I am wearing a knee length dress, because I’m short, heels slims the the outfit for me. I love shopping in Europe (and any country for that matter), the style is different and when I wear it, it brings back nice memories. :)

Very lovely outfit!! Love that dress!

Also, totally off-topic, but did anyone ever tell you that you look like Kate Winslet in the Titanic movie? I hadn’t seen the movie in years until I saw it in 3D last night…and the entire time I was trying to figure out who she reminded me of. I think it’s more her face shape/structure and physique in that movie particularly, but I couldn’t stop thinking about it the entire time ;)

    Jenna Reply:

That’s the first time I’ve heard that! I’ll have to look at some stills now (was the movie worth it in 3D?)

    Danielle Reply:

In my opinion, no…but then again, I’m also not a big fan of 3D in general. I do happen to LOVE Titanic, so any excuse for me to see it in the theater will get me there, though ;) As for the 3D, it didn’t really make it feel more realistic or anything like that, so I’d save your money and perhaps just watch it at home (that is, unless you’re a huge fan like me and need a fix of it on the big screen ;))

  7. I like the outfit but I think the tights color isn’t super flattering here. Something about the skin undertone showing through that brings pink-ness to the grey tone. I think a thicker, opaque winter grey sweater tight would be better if you wanted to do grey. I personally think one of your bright pairs would be really fun with this dress (like pink!) I also still love the super dated shiny sheer leg look, either the super sheer black or sheer nude, it’s like sparkly leg frosting !

Maybe a vertically pattertened tight would also be elongating? Like a stripe with some sheer or lighter parts? I rarely ever wear tights (hello Atlanta weather!) so this is all speculation : )
